Don't sensationalise the news – talk show guest Damion C. Grange
He was speaking as a guest on the ‘Cross Talk’ aired on CBN Channel 51 on Saturday February 27, 2016 and hosted by Bishop John I. Cline of the New Life Baptist Church (NLBC).
“I think one way to stay engaged and this is my opinion, is to stay away from sensationalism,” he said.
“Know the facts... because I think we have moved into an era where the headlines... are not a true reflection of the facts,” he said.
He said the territory is now in a competitive media age and people do what is necessary to grab the attention and keep readers and viewers engaged.
“That is not good for accuracy and the dissemination of facts. People will just run to the headlines... they read that and then they forget the rest of the story. Because we you know they can take an entire story from just one word.”
“That is something I would caution our people to stay away from and if you see the headline and it is engaging then find out the facts. Call the department that you know is responsible for this... know for yourselves. Get the data and be engaged in that way,” he said.
Bloggers have their own prejudices
At this point, host of the show Bishop Cline chimed in, saying the point that Grange made is a valid one and that the caution is well taken at least by him.
“Because a lot of the time people will just read the headlines and not the story. And based on the caption they would start to blog and sometimes you think that the people who are blogging have no real sense of what they are taking about. They are just shooting off at the mouth because of their own prejudices against somebody or for somebody and that is not good,” Bishop Cline said.
