ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Information and Education Manager at the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) Philomena N. Robertson said that while things might be returning to normal people should not get complacent as another storm is brewing.

“The Atlantic hurricane season is far from over, there is another system already coming from the African coast. Residents are encouraged not to become complacent. Persons need to ensure that their disaster plans are in place, whether for family, business or Government department and be prepared to take the required actions as they become necessary,” she said in a comment to this news site today, August 28, 2015.

This morning the DDM announced that it had discontinued the tropical storm warning for Erika.

Robertson noted that various operations that had been affected by the now dwindling storm are coming back on stream.

“Operations are returning to normal across the BVI following the passage of Tropical Storm Erika. The National Emergency Operations Centre has been receiving updates from various agencies. The BVI Airports Authority has already resumed operations at the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport while operations at the other two will resume shortly,” she said in a comment to this news site.

She noted that the BVI Ports Authority has re-opened the sea ports for domestic travel and the decision to resume international ferry service operations is dependent on the USVI Ports Authority.

The VI spared most significant impact

Robertson said that while some decisions might have been unpopular they were necessary for the preservation of life.

“The BVI was obviously spared the most significant impact from TS Erika but we need to appreciate the value of being prepared and making tough decisions, which although unpopular, are always geared at saving lives,” she said.

“We are monitoring the impact on the system on the US Virgin Islands and also in Dominica. The local disaster office stands ready to offer any assistance as needed to our counterparts,” she said.

So far it appears that Dominica has had the brunt of the storm with major damage to infrastructure and reports of lives being lost.

Tropical wave forecast, says National Hurricane Center

Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center of the US is advising that a tropical wave is forecast to move off of the west coast of Africa over the weekend. “Some slow development is possible through the middle of next week while the system moves west-northwestward near the Cape Verde Islands at about 10 mph. Formation chance through 48 hours...low...near 0 percent; Formation chance through 5 days...low...30 percent,” said a bulletin that was posted on their website today.

If it seems that we are becoming complacent a lot has to do with the terrible information coming from the DDM and the DGO. It is becoming clear that there judgments and advisories are nothing more than jokes. The two last weather system has shown that while the DDM was given sufficient data their ability to analyze it is poor to say the least. I am convince that no one at the DDM knows how to analyze data on weather conditions. The DDM needs a much needed overhaul. This should include but not limited to new equipment, new building, new competent and well train staff, and a new leader. We can no longer rely on the numerous uncertainties and erroneous information coming from both the DDM and the DGO. Lives, properties, and livelihood o the people of these islands are at stake.

Are you an expert in the field to say what should and shouldn't happen? The profession of meteorology is not an exact science! The information relayed to DDM are "PROJECTIONS" from the weather stations in Antigua, PR & Miami. Storms/Hurricanes are not predicatable and in the case of the last two the changed last minute! Oh i'm sorry i guess they should have predicted that too huh? FOH!!!

Even the larger weather stations and advisories are guessing with this storm. Next time DDM and Ag. Governor gives a word why don't you just do the opposite and be sure that you will be responsible for your own safety. Better to err on the side of caution than to endanger people's lives. DDM and leader thank you for taking our safety into consideration always.

It would be great if you could spell properly then maybe someone will take your words seriously!! DDM has done an excellent job in keeping the public informed. What would happen if the department never existed?! You would be the first one to say that the government is not doing their job! Can't please people like you.

So what would you have to say about Dominica then?

You really are an ungrateful fool. On Wednesday night on the 11pm update the National Hurricane Centre, not the DDM put the storm just 3 miles from Tortola on Thursday evening. What would you have had the DDM do, ignore it? They acted in good faith and in collaboration with the Met office in Antigua the necessary warnings were issued. We should be thanking God Erika passed some 100 miles from us rather than trying to bring this department down. They probably worked with very little sleep in the last 48 hours, a word of thanks would be nice.

It is the right hand of God that keep guiding us from these storms but still some are not heeding to good advice. Most of the time and most islands have to depend on info coming from Antigua or Miami . THESE STORMS SOMETIME SHIFT,DOWN SIZE,UPGRADE DEPENDING ON THE FRONT THEY ENCOUNTERED,TEMPERATURE,ETC.We are so ungrateful and I am certain that young lady is doing a good job,she is not God and so are we.Give thanks and praises.

Thank you God for sparing the BVI whenever a storm passes. We have been very fortunate to avoid being directly hit. Kudos to the DDM for updating the public and doing their best.

These kind of comments are in such bad taste and show a complete lack of thought. Thank god for sparing the BVI but killing people in Dominica? What is wrong with you believers of the skyfairy? Do you not even think before you say things? Does it just come out automatically with no rational thought processes going on in your mind? The BVI was spared by nature not your imaginary friend in the sky. Why would a so called god give the BVI such an easy time when it is so full of hypocrites, fornicators, thieves, dishonesty, greed, prejudice and lack of compassion for mankind?
Thank you to the DDM for doing a great job with the scientific information that they had at hand!

I wish you would allow me to believe what I believe and you believe the crap you want to believe. How can you be so stupid and say nature saved the BVI. Why would nature spare the bvi and not Dominica. Nature is subject to God What you forget, or don't believe is that there is someone who has power over death, He has the last say, He is GOD Almighty. Death releases the spirit from a corrupt body, but then you probably don, believe that humans are tripartite a. You have not a clue because FAITH is a myth to you. You believe what you want and let us believe what we want. This is a Christian community so know that your atheistic views will met head on. Amen

When will we get it in our heads that the information receive comes from met offices as far as miami and they are more advanced than us and and yet they had erika wrong most of the times. The department and other authorities then make decisions based on these. Climate change has changed our weather patterns making weather forecasti ng and predictions more uncertain. We need to stop airing our ignorance.
