ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – “It’s for young men of the Virgin Islands to get to understand what real life is about and what some of the consequences [are] for some of the decisions they would make. If they make good decisions they would have a very perhaps successful career and be a productive member of the community and if they don’t you might just meet them up Balsum Ghut,” said President of the Rotary Club of Road Town Mr. Shan Mohamed.

“We want to try and reach them long before it reaches that stage, also as Rotary has signed on this year to the Youth at Risk initiative. So we are not just talking but we are also demonstrating by our actions that we are supporting the young people,” added Mr Mohamed.

Mr Mohamed was at the time of speaking with this news site saluting the initiative of Follow the Movement (FTM) which would tomorrow February 11, 2015, be staging its second seminar targeting senior students of the High Schools and Tertiary institutions in the Virgin Islands via a seminar titled ‘Show Love…”

The seminar for young men aptly coincides with the theme for Rotary for the month of February which is ‘World Understanding Month’. “So I think that this forum is so timely because this initiative by Follow the Movement and Craig (Craig A. Lake) addresses conflict resolution to some degree so we are particularly pleased yet again about addressing the young men of the Virgin Islands in an attempt for them to get an understanding of what real life is about,” said Mr Mohamed.

Further, he said that their collaboration with the FTM seminar would admonish the young men to become members of the Rotary’s Interact Club arm as it is a community based club.

“For those young men about Interact age limit they are encouraged to become members of the Rotaract Club as they would be welcomed into the Rotary Family and be positively influenced making them production members of society,” he said.

The programme will be held on the top floor of UP’s Cineplex. ‘Show Love – we are responsible for this generation’ which will take the format of a seminar will touch on topics such as prison life, social media, peer pressure, domestic violence, purpose of life, anger management, leadership skills, school dropouts and consequences and tattoos and piercings.

Among the team of facilitators for the seminar are Ms Anthea L. Smith, Mr Julien N. Johnson, Mr Dion K. Crabbe, Pastor Melvin A. Turnbull, Mr Addison ‘Addi’ Nisbet, Mr Roger Mathavious Jr., among others including personnel from the discipline and correctional institutions in the Territory.

So his message isn't wrong, it's the messenger you have a problem with, because of where he comes from?

Once again, we see the attitude which is the biggest hinderence to the BVI moving forward.

EASY FOR YOU TO SAY FELLOW ROTARIAN, LAST TIME I CHECKED ALL ROTARIANS EITHER HAD RICH PARENTS,MAKING THOUSANDS ON A MONTHLY BASIS AND DRIVING AROUND EXPENSIVE VEHICLES THERE IS NO WAY A ROTARIAN CAN GO TO PRISON. HMMM INTERESTING I WOULD RESPECT THAT STATEMENT COMMING FROM SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY STRUGGLED IN THEIR LIFE TIME.

Maybe they went to school and paid attention. Stop making excuses and get the hell up! College is FREE in the BVI yet people blog and complain and bitch about what other people have. You don't know what people do to get what they have and where they are so keep your eyes in your damn head and focus on you. You all want to waste time, waste opportunity and then look sympathy in the end. I know many people who have life hard and continue to work hard, struggle and sacrifice hoping that one day they can benefit from all the work they have put in. How you know who struggle from who never struggle? You have a big crystal ball home showing everybody's past life? You sound so dumb! A man being rich now and driving a benz doesn't mean he was born rich.

HAHA you must be some special kind of stupid. You sound like an envious jealous person who needs to get a life. Why don't you start your own club and go from there instead of judging people.

you people fail to understand that I'm not jealous of the rotarians, I'm just saying that most of them had a good start in life. What about that is being jealous? I'm just stating the obvioius, some people just don't like to hear the truth.

You want to save the world? SAVE THE CHILDREN, no reason they should have a high school diploma but cant service a car, boat, grow plants or anything beneficial to the place they are from... Majority of older people dont change, they only get better at hiding who they really are. Our children need education on life, how sticking together makes stronger, and how important every last one of them are before they can do things like algebra. These youngsters wont be killing themselves if they understood basic things that helped them see their value. We cannot continue to pump them out of school ready for the economy but knowing nothing of humanity.

It's all good to say this ..yes work with them at the high school but my recollection of old time saying is 'bend the branches of a tree when it's young...So why not go into the Primary schools more often and even the preschools where the children's minds are like sponges and try to work from there up towards getting them to understand the values of life.....Remember if a house doesn't have a firm foundation there is likely to be disaster.

@Just Saying...You are right! Let's start with the children while they are in the formative age group (kindergarten, primary...). This does not mean that the present initiative is not good. It is never too late to save the youth (females and especially males). Another way we can reach young people is by our own lifestyles. If we are christians let us be true christians, not "professed christians". Above all the knowledge that can be imparted to the young people is true education - that is, that they may experience a personal experience with the creator, who will provide them with all the positive attributes that can bring them true happiness and success anywhere in the world.
