ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Jose Ramon Delar Rosa and Maria Samuel of the Dominican Republic were found guilty by Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards on May 23, 2014 of conspiracy to smuggle migrants.

The two were accused of harbouring a Dominican Republic national who escaped from prison after being arrested for entering the Territory illegally.

The matter was prosecuted by Senior Crown Counsel Leslie Ann Faulkner.

The defendants were taken into custody in July 2012 after officers of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force who were executing a joint operation in Virgin Gorda visited a residence in the area of the Valley, and found the two persons and the Dominican Republic national identified as Eduard Beltran.

Beltran was charged with entering the Territory illegally.

The two had been remand for an extended period of time after their status was deemed illegal in the Territory but were later released.
