ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The stealing of stickers from vehicles has attracted a new mechanism by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) as it attempts to crack down on the illegal activity.

The new mechanism, however, has not quite solved the problem as such thefts continue because of the prevelance of the 2013 stickers that is still in circulation, according to DMV.

Speaking with Virgin Islands News Online during a recent press conference called by the Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Mark H. Vanterpool, Acting Commissioner of DMV Mr Kye Rymer said the department has succeeded in minimising the number thefts as evident in the reduced number of persons coming with such reports.

“It’s a situation we looked into, from last year our numbers were 147 replacement stickers so it caused us to make a change in the way the decal is manufactured. This year it is now semi perforated,” said Mr Rymer. In its newly designed format, Mr Rymer said if someone attempts to remove the sticker the center of the decal/sticker detaches.

“Up until June this year we would have had about 29 replacement stickers. So far we have seen a reduction in that decal sticker.” However, despite the reduction some persons seem to have been successfully beating the system by applying the “stricter the government, the wiser the population” notion as it is obvious that persons who are still losing their decal through deliberate acts of theft.

According to Mr Rymer, DMV has been engaging the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) in suspicious cases. “We have contacted the police where we see that some motorists would have come with an altered or a decal that is not for that vehicle. I am not sure what the police have done after reporting it,” said Mr Rymer.

He explained that due to the fact that there are quite a lot of the 2013 stickers still in circulation, culprits are having the upper hand as the figure for theft of stickers is still high. The department said it would be in a better position to grapple with the unlawful trend come January 1, 2014 when the 2013 decals would have expired in totality.

the cops need to do their jobs...sorry to day, to many of them just wear uniform for a show, and walk around as if though they have all privilege to do as they please, also, staff rotation need to be done in these departments, just in case, people are selling them are giving them out from quite inside the department.
