ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Session one of the BVI Athletics Association’s 3rd Development Meet of the season on Friday January 27, 2017 at the A.O. Shirley Grounds saw several strong performances, headlined by D’Jimon Gumbs.

Action got underway with the Girls 100m Hurdles, which was won in fine style by Xiamora Malone. The Girls High Jump was also an exciting event with Arianna Hayde holding off the challenge of Malone and Z’Nia Hutchinson to win with a 1.55m effort.

K’Cei Moses also set a new PB in his 100m Sprint.

However, attention soon turned to the Boys Shot Put and yet another record breaking effort from D’Jimon Gumbs, who followed up his National Youth Record in the Discus from last week with a 16.43m Heave to shatter the National Youth Record in that event too.

Gumbs, who gave credit to the inspiration the twin sisters, Tynelle and Trevia, give him in keeping up the hard work and dedication, has now qualified for the Carifta Games in both events.

“I’m happy,” he commented. “I have to give thanks for getting the record, I felt good in the warm up, but my shot put could have been better.”

There is a full card of events scheduled for Day Two, today January 28, 2017 on the A.O. Shirley Grounds, including at 1 P.M. the Boys 110m Hurdles.

The Heptathlon for the Girls will also resume and various sprints will feature throughout the afternoon.
