ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Exciting raffle prizes of a roundtrip to Puerto Rico via Cape Air, one night stay for two at Nail Bay Resort and an opportunity for a family of four to swim with the dolphins at Dolphin Discovery among other prizes seemed to have not been enough to draw strong support for the Family Support Network’ (FSN) Family Fun Day held on Saturday October 15, 2011 at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park.

The fun day and raffle were held by FSN as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which is being observed this month and as a fund raiser for a shelter for victims of domestic abuse.

According to Director/Therapist of the Family Support Network (FSN), Chonda Jeffers, she had expected to see a lot more persons especially families coming out to support the day’s activities but was nevertheless grateful to those who took the time to visit the park to lend their support.

Among those persons were reigning Miss BVI Abigail Hyndman, who continues to have a strong presence in the community ever since winning the coveted crown on the morning of August 1, 2011. Miss Hyndman even assisted in the sale of food and pulled the tickets for the raffle.

Meanwhile, the prize of a one-night stay at Nail Bay Resort went to lucky raffle ticket holder Merlene Trotman, the trip to Puerto Rico via Cape Air was won by Margaux Walters and the chance to swim with the dolphins at Dolphin Discovery was won by Camille Merry. Other prizes that were won included two nights stay at the Myett’s Hotel, two roundtrips to Virgin Gorda via Speedy’s Fast Ferry, dinner for two at Myett’s Garden Grill and massage at Myett’s Spa.

FSN would also be staging a play by the Elmore Stoutt High School Drama Society at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium on October, 23, 2011. The play is entitled “Paternal Love” where a male is portrayed as the victim of domestic violence. “We tend to focus a lot on female victims and forget that males are also abused,” Jeffers said. Half of the proceeds for the play would go towards the Drama Society of the ESHS.

FSN is expressing gratitude to all the sponsors of the raffle prizes including Zrod 103.FM, HLSCC, Dolphin Discovery, ESHS, Miss BVI 2011 Abigail Hyndman, Office of Gender Affairs, Ministry of Health and Social Development and Ladies of S.A.S.S.

The entity has also planned a ‘purple event’ for Friday October 28, 2011 and persons will be asked to attire themselves in that colour. FSN would also be decorating various parts of Road Town with purple balloons and ribbons. “Purple is the symbol colour internationally to remind the world that many individuals have died as a result of domestic violence. Thus purple is a symbol for members of the community to stand together in unity against domestic violence”, FSN stated in a press release.

Family Support Network (FSN) is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation whose primary aim is to support families affected by domestic violence.

I passed by there at the time they said they were going to start and they were still setting up and clearly not ready. As a result i went back home, even though i had every intention of supporting this event. Its time for this kind of tardiness in the BVI to stop and events be pulled off properly.

You need to read past articles about FSN as they only have two full time staff and they rely heavily on support of the community and volunteers. Its time to stop complaining if we are not going to extend our hands! Clearly you are right about the time.... however, that should have not detour you from supporting. You as bad as any one who comments on the bad and is not proactive in assisting....

Whilst i dont disagree with your comments, I was not in a position to help that day as my time was limited due to personal reasons. I did however make the effort to drive to town to at least support the event, but as i mentioned, it was still being set up. This is however one of our big downfalls in the BVI, there is no comprehension of events actually starting on time - this being the point i was trying to make.

We have become too complacent in this country. No matter how late J'ouvert start we run cum down fast speeding like a jet.

I agree, not one of them politicians were present at this community event. They just want to show up at people funerals to shake hands.
