ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Digicel is delivering on its promise to the Region and territory with the announcement today, Wednesday August 19, 2015, of a series of “Jump Start” Basketball Clinics aimed at finding the next Caribbean NBA star.

Earlier this year, with the announcement of a partnership between the NBA and Digicel SportsMax, a promise was made to also launch grassroots programmes across the region to further strengthen interest and create opportunity for the Region’s best players so they can realise their dreams.

That promise has now come true with the Digicel Jump Start programme, which tips off in the Virgin Islands next week.

40 youths, aged 14-16, from around the territory will be put through their paces at an NBA style two-day training camp, complete with two NBA coaches, at the end of which the top five players will be chosen to attend a further camp in Trinidad and Tobago.

Digicel will be hosting several youth clinics with NBA coaches in the Caribbean, at the end of which, the best of the best five, those considered the brightest talents in the region, will travel to the United States where they will train with a top NBA team.

During the week in the territory, local coaches will also be given a clinic and the youth from both Virgin Gorda and Tortola have been getting ready under the watchful eyes of Jason A. Edwin.

Action and the camps begin on August 24, 2015 with the ‘Coaches Clinic’ and continue at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex until August 27 when the assessments will be announced and those attending will learn if they are amongst the Fortunate Five!

This is BVI, good luck with that. At minimum I hope the persons chosen are disciplined and have respect. Too often some of our very good athletes are idiots who smoke a set of weed and disrespect people because they have a bit of talent. We could have many more athletes overseas competing on a professional level if it weren't for their bad attitudes and indiscipline.

i pass cross the gym deh other day and i see a couple of them youths in there that have no respect and not doing good in school.. i identified 4 youths that failed this past school year in there training with edwin...im sorry to say but i think this camp is only focusing on the best players and not their standards such as education, loyalty and respect.

Dion Edwin had an opportunity to become your first although he repping USVI. But other than him BVI decades sways from seeing an NBA player.

Culture too selfish to let talent work with truly skilled developers.

Come on folks! Be more positive when it comes to youths. We continue to weigh down the youths and this country with negativity. We need to put positive vibes in the air and keep encouraging the people around us and help them to fulfill their dreams. There is always the first to something.
