ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Digicel is proud to be supporting the Elmore Stoutt High School Literary and Debating Society (LaDS) as they travel to St. Maarten to represent BVI at the 44th annual Leeward Islands Debating Competition (LIDC). The event is hosted by The Hyacinth Richardson Educational Awareness Foundation at the Sonesta Maho Beach Resort from Thursday, February 25th until Sunday, February 28th, 2016.

The students will be debating different topics during the four-day competition. The topics will range from social, political, technological, cultural and educational issues facing the region. The teams will be paired and must defend the assigned position of the provided moot.

Team BVI, which includes six young men and women - Maya Bazar (winner of the 2015 Junior Tourism Minister Debate Competition), Kelliann Freeman, Makaela Davis, Allandel Williams, Jamoll St.Rose and Tariq Maduro will compete with debaters from Antigua, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla and host country St. Maarten.

“Every year, I am amazed that our members can take on the challenge of preparing intellectually stimulating presentations on such weighty topics. And they do this for the love of learning and nothing else. These young people are filled with potential, and I am so proud of them." Commented, Mrs. M. Abednego, Staff Sponsor of the ESHS LaDS.

Team Antigua and Montserrat will open the competition on Thursday evening. They debate the following proposition: “Legislatively removing corporal punishment will be detrimental to Caribbean children.”

Then on Friday, team BVI faces St. Kitts to debate “The free movement of CARICOM nationals is a net positive for the Caribbean region.”

This is followed by debate number three, St. Maarten takes vs. Nevis about this issue: “The illegal drug trade has undermined the legitimacy and effectiveness of Caribbean governments.”

On Saturday, the winner of Antigua vs. Montserrat faces the winner of BVI vs. St Kitts about another interesting topic: “The popularity of skin lightening is a testament to the racism/colorism that plagues Caribbean society.”

Next, the team from Anguilla faces the winner of St. Maarten vs. Nevis about the topic: “The Caribbean is not doing enough to combat child abuse.”

The winners of Saturday’s debates face off in the finals on Sunday. At that time they will have to present their points about this issue: “The marginalization of men has led to the breakdown of Caribbean society.”

As a business, we understand our corporate and social responsivities to our communities and its people. We are truly delighted to have the opportunity to support youth empowerment and development, by making a contribution to the ESHS Literary and Debating Society. We are very proud of these extraordinary individuals and wish them all the best as they represent the territory.” commented Digicel Commercial Director, Tommy Farrell.
