ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The Campaign Against Chronic Diseases (CARES) Committee, under the umbrella of the British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVIHSA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Development and the British Virgin Islands (BVI) Diabetes Association screened 75 persons for Blood Sugar, Blood Pressure, and Cholesterol, while providing education and counseling.

In an effort to create health awareness on diabetes and in observance of National Diabetes Month in November 2012, the CARES Committee, along with the aforementioned bodies hosted a screening event last Friday, 16th November at the Central Administration Complex Breezeway.

Mrs. Lucy Martin, Director of Public Health Nursing and member of the CARES Committee expressed her sentiments of the day’s event, “We are very pleased with the turnout from the public who expressed appreciation and we look forward to continuing similar activities as we aspire to promote a more health conscious Territory”.

Mrs. Roselia James-Dawson, Resource Manager for the Diabetes Association was also encouraged by the turnout and reiterated the theme for the year which is, ACT ON DIABETES NOW.  She also made mention of the blue circle pins which were on sale.

The pin symbolizes life and health, and the purpose of the diabetes symbol is to give diabetes a common identity.  Most significantly for the campaign, the circle symbolizes unity.  It aims to support all existing efforts to raise awareness about diabetes, inspire new activities, bring diabetes to the attention of the general public, brand diabetes, and to provide a means to show support for the fight against diabetes.
