Devon U. Osborne says he's ready to be 9th District Representative
Mr Osborne made the bold announcement within the walls of the Ashford Walters Community Centre in the Valley Virgin Gorda.
“Today I am standing here once again letting you know that I am a member of the Virgin Islands Party, YES I AM, I have paid my dues and as the Chairman said the Ninth District has to go through a democratic process of selecting the next candidate…”
“I am letting you know that I am willing, capable, able, to execute that mission,” stated Mr. Osborne to loud rounds of applause. “I am hoping that I could be nominated. If not I would respect and support whoever is selected to represent this district behind the Virgin Islands Party,” he added.
He reminded residents that he is an aspiring politician and had contested the general elections in 2007 and 2011. He made it public information that he stands fully in support of the VIP under the current administration and hopefully the new government to come following the next National Elections.
“I ran for office exercising my democratic rights. A lot of people believe that I ran because Hon Ralph T. O’Neal [OBE] put me to do that and that was not so that is false,” said Mr Osborne.
“I know I did so because I want betterment not only for myself but also my country.” He told residents that attempts were made to have him branded as some type of a radical, “… and I have been evicted from the press booth of the House of Assembly,” he said.
Good afternoon Madam Speaker
Osborne sought to clear the air that he did not go to the House of Assembly to cause any confusion but rather to basically listen to the debate, acquire information in order to deliver same to persons who would not have had the opportunity to hear same because of some reason or the other. “...But I was evicted [for] just saying good afternoon to the Speaker of the House and I don’t know how she took it.”
According to Mr Osborne at the most recent sitting of the House of Assembly on Friday June 13, 2014 Speaker of the house Honourable Ingrid Moses had said “Good morning” to him and he responded, “Good afternoon”. “It was 12:30, I don’t know how she took it and that’s my sentiment.”
Mr Osborne challenged others to have the courage and step forward and express their interest in taking on the position as Representative for the Ninth District.
Immediately following Mr Osborne’s announcement Representative for the First District and staunch member of the Virgin Islands Party Honourable Andrew A. Fahie made it abundantly clear that the views expressed by Mr Osborne were not necessarily those of the VIP.
“I want to say it early because it’s getting late in my political career, Devon is a VIP but I say like ZBVI, the views expressed are not necessarily those of the [VIP]...It was his democratic right, it was an open meeting. Virgin Gorda you are going to decide who you want. This wasn’t rehearsed… we heard it just like you… whether you send him or who it’s up to you,” said Hon Fahie. “I don’t want anybody leave from here thinking that was a set up… so Devon could say for himself,” added Hon Fahie.
During his opening address VIP new Chairman Hon Julian Fraser, RA (R3) told residents that it had come as a surprise to the VIP members when Hon Ralph T. O’Neal OBE, current Ninth District Representative had announced that he was not going to contest for that position come the elections period.
Much was spoken highly of Hon O’Neal’s contributions towards the development of Virgin Gorda during his lifetime as a politician, government leader and District Representative.
