ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Virgin Islands overseas based college basketball player Deon J. Edwin and the Kent State University men's basketball team (1-0) started off the season with a thrilling victory in the Northeast Ohio Coaches vs Cancer doubleheader on Saturday November 12, 2016 over Cleveland State (1-0), 79-74, in overtime.

Senior, Edwin, finished with 12 points, 10 of which came in an overtime period in which he shot 4-for-5.

Entering overtime, Edwin was shooting 1-for-7 from the floor, but that did not prevent the senior from putting the team on his back. He scored all four of the Flashes' field goals in the period and 10 of the team's 13 points.

An Edwin steal and layup on the opposite end gave Kent State a 75-69 lead with 1:06 remaining. Although a Cleveland State trey cut it to three, Kent State was able to hold on for their first victory.

"He really struggled early but in overtime he was great," Coach Rob Senderoff said. "He's a senior and has to have a short memory. I'm really happy for him and proud of him. It's not easy when you're struggling the entire game to come up big in overtime."

Smith & Bristol Flyers struggle

Elsewhere, Leslee J. Smith and the Bristol Flyers continue to struggle, this time with an 62-81 defeat by the Newcastle Eagles.

The Flyers were only down eight at the half and surged ahead in the third with Mike Vigor capping an 8-0 run with five consecutive points of his own to make it 44-45. However, Newcastle led by 19 at the end of the third and continued to pile on the points with a three from Deondre Parks making it 77-50 four minutes into the final period.

The visitors stemmed the flow by allowing just four more points but the damage had been done.

Smith finished with 6 points, 2 blocks and 6 rebounds.

Bristol now have a 1-6 record and are left to rue their high number of turnovers that were turned into 33 points by their opponents.

And Nigel Carey scored 13 points to help the Rider University Bronco’s to an 76-56 win over Hampton University, also adding 6 rebounds, 1 block and 2 steals.
