GEORGETOWN, Guyana - More than seventy-two (72) hours after the official close on polls on March 2, 2020 final elections results are still pending in Guyana with tensions growing as both the ruling A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) Coalition Government and the main opposition People's Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) declaring victory in the polls.

According to our correspondent in the South American country and former British colony, more than 600,000 people registered for the elections in the heated battle dubbed 'The mother of all elections' with the winner of these 2020 General and Regional elections, going on to control a booming oil and gas sector and oil reserves—one of the largest in the hemisphere—in addition to guiding the country's path under its future as an oil producer.

However, an inability of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM); the constitutional body responsible for carrying out elections in the country, to declare early results for the largest electoral district Region 4 - Demarara Mahaica, has sparked rumours of attempts at rigging by the PPP/C and smaller parties.

So far, the declarations of the Region 4 results, have been delayed four times amidst controversy, leading to concerns raised by political parties and observers, with officials at GECOM saying they were awaiting verification of Statements of Poll (SOP) from the individual polling stations in Region Four to tabulate the final results.

APNU+AFC Leading in Polls

However, up to publication time, GECOM has gone ahead and released tabulations for Region 4 showing the APNU+AFC winning 136,458 votes in Region 4 to the PPP's 77,329 with local media indicating that those results are from the unverified Statement of Polls.

The PPP/C is insisting that they received 80,344 votes in that region through its own statement of polls now in the public domain, with the APNU+AFC receiving 114,354 according to that release.

With all of the regions now in, the APNU+AFC moves ahead in the polls with 237,140 votes versus the PPP's 229,450 Votes, The PPP/C has filed an injunction in the High Court, restricting GECOM from declaring unverified results for elections.

Both parties have declared to their followers that they are winners of the elections with coalition supporters already taking to the street in celebrating ahead of the official declaration of the winner by GECOM.

This is a developing story.

If the PPP wins, Guyana can kiss that oil money and any chance of real development goodbye.

Anybody following that elections would be confused, this looks like a key summary. All of the political parties in Guyana is the same pot of kettle, as I understand this happened before. You can't get all the details in a developing story, we just have to wait.

Apparently, there is another blogger using the name E. Leonard. For anyone that is interested, I didn’t post and don’t take credit for and have any association with the above comment.

Why be a copy cat? It looks as if you have the ability to make a strong argument that would be of interest to others so why can’t you use your another moniker. The other E. Leonard (Long-term user of the moniker, assuming)) has disavowed any association with the post. You have shifted the focus from any point you were intending to make and shifted it to authenticity of a moniker. I asked why be a copy cat but in retrospect, you first name may indeed start with an E. and your title (surname) is Leonard.

The news present the details is up to you to ask the questions. Go and ask corrupt Jagdeo how he turned president in 1997... cause he never won that elections and he wasn't even running.

I’m getting a laugh out of watching them go back and forth in the comments on Facebook. I’ve picked up that the Indian Guyanese people refer to the Afro-Guyanese people as monkeys (so just know they hold those same sentiments about us Afro-Caribbean locals) & the Afro-Guyanese people refer to the Indian Guyanese people as hooligans (which they are based on all the videos circulating). Straight, stringy, oily hair

"Straight, stringy, oily hair"???? Hmmm weird, so why do some people "straight" their hair or put on long straight wigs??? LOL

If the PPP it’s almost guaranteed that they will seek to change the Guyanese Constitution in order to remain in power for decades to come.

The friction between Indo-Guyanese and Afro-Guyanese if not resolve and resolve soon will stifle Guyana’s growth and development. In case they forget, they are Guyanese (at the end of the day, they are one people, one nation). Guyana has been blessed with a huge oil (Black gold) find that if managed effectively can raise the standard of living, quality of life and per capita income of Guyanese. Some pundits are claiming that Guyana is on the verge of being one of the richest countries in the world.

Guyanese everywhere, at home or abroad, can and should benefit immensely from the oil find, if it is managed effectively. And for it to be managed effectively, all Guyanese must work cooperatively and collaboratively. They must and should do it for the future and well-being of Guyana and its people, all its people, Indians, Blacks, and others.

Guyanese must fight the resource curse (paradox of plenty) whereby a nation is rich/wealthy yet the masses are dirt poor, ie, many countries on the African continent. These countries are plagued by fraud, corruption, greed mismanagement, neocolonialism, self hatred.......etc. In some cases, they lacked the economic mechanisms and skill sets to use their wealth to produce positive outcomes for the masses. On the other hand, many resource-poor countries import resources from resource-rich countries and develop a higher standard of living and quality of life for their citizens than exist in the resource-rich countries. Disunity wreck any possibility of the West Indies Federation succeeding(1958-1962). The one from ten leave nought by a leading regional political leader came to fruition; the region would have been farther down the road politically, economically, and culturally if the Federation was given a fighting chance. As a result of the break up, the region is dotted with many small independent countries struggling to survive on a single economy———tourism. Guyana must unite; the region must unite.

@E. Leonard, thanks for the realistic and real talk commentary. Every Guyanese at home and abroad, especially here at home, should read and take to heart this commentary. In my opinion, the commentary is advising and encouraging Guyana to take advantage of this window of opportunity before it closes for the benefit of the masses. The outlook here at home on the impact of oil revenue on the lives of ordinary Guyanese is mixed. The challenge for the next government and any succeeding government(s) is to ensure that the oil revenue benefits all Guyanese. If you are Guyanese, welcome home and if not you are welcome to Guyanese to enjoy the beauty of Guyana and the warmth of the Guyanese people.
