ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The very outspoken talk show host Donald deCastro has recommended that members of the House of Assembly (HOA) and certain preachers of the Gospel join the Toastmasters Club of Tortola to improve their communication skills.

Speaking on his radio programme Straight Talk, which was aired on Wednesday March 7, 2012, deCastro noted that he is a Christian, who tries his best to practice that way of life, and involves himself in politics but he has a serious problem with two sets of people in the Territory - the politicians in the HOA and certain preachers.

“Now we listen to the House of Assembly, they need to join Toastmasters. They get in there and they say Madam Speaker, Mister Speaker and their speech is a hundred words long, 85 of those words are either Mister Speaker or Madam Speaker that by the time they are through you forget the essence of their speech. You need to get them in there. They need that training badly and the Minister of Education, the present one and the last one are the worst of the set. They say Madam Speaker more than anyone else...they need to get in Toastmasters.”

While it was noted that Madam Speaker or Mister Speaker is widely used in Parliaments in many countries, the radio host noted that it was being overused in the local House.

The talk show host added that sometimes when he listens to preachers and church ministers on the radio he has to turn the radio off. “They are saying a prayer 20 words long and 18 are either God, The Father or Jesus. You need to get them in there (Toastmasters Club).”

Meanwhile, deCastro’s guests on the programme were Jeremiah Frett, Dr. Marjorie YeeSingh and Damion Grange of the Toastmasters Club of Tortola. The club said Toastmasters would benefit anyone who is willing to improve on their communication skills and that it also teaches leadership skills.

I agree with DeCastro 100%. The entire Islands of the BVI need speech training. First of all, everything is a speech, secondly the speeches are long and empty and thirdly most of what they have to say do not relate to the subject. Sometimes I just turn the TV when they are on. Case in point, the revamp of the Crime Stoppers, everyone spoke, why was that?

I think the days of long speeches is a thing of the past. From what I've heard so far, the oppositon seems to be the ones with most of the long-winded talk. Myron's speeches are great. Alvera's not so bad. I think she needs a bit more practice talking and she'll be great. Rookie politicians tend to be like that. DeCastro's shows are not the better narrated either. His skills, too, can use a bit of a "paint brush" from the Toast Master's. Perhaps speech classes here and there held by the college can surely help the public better hone theirskills for all areas that involve the spoken word.

LOL, but hear who talking? DeCastro is the one who needs to attend Toast Masters...I wonder if he ever listen back to his tapes? You know what his problem is? he just wants to be notice. He failed at a trying to become an elected official so he will always have something negative to say about members of the house. He need to get a life. He miserable and he looking company.
