Dead horse @ race track creates a stink for SCB residents
Reports reaching this news site is that the animal fell into the open well and became lodged some 10 feet down and it died sometime after since it could not free itself.
A visit by this news site yesterday November 9, 2014 found that the stench of the animal was beyond unbearable and days after the incident, the carcass had not been removed.
“There has always been a well on the track from years ago and after the track was remodeled and was raised, the base of the well came from eight to ten feet up,” said a source close to the track. “It is like a blind spot and the horses on the infield feeding, sometimes the horses fighting each other and they run and then they running from the other horses they just run right into it because it is like a blind spot,” said the source.
He said that the opening of the well is four feet by four feet and by the time a horse falls into it, the animal would have broken a leg or its neck and hence remain incapacitated and eventually succumbing.
“They die in there and nobody seems to care to want to remove them from the pit,” he said. He said that after they fall into the pit of the well, they land on some iron bars that stop them from going right into the water.
“And they stink up the whole neighbourhood,” he said.
According to the source, the first incident where a horse fell into the well was in 2006. He said that it was reported and nothing had been done.
The man said that first the well needs to be cleaned since it is an important source of water, especially in times of drought.
“The Government needs to clean the well and then place a covering on it so that this won’t happen anymore,” he said.
Speaking to this news site yesterday November 9, 2014, Lesmore Smith of the Virgin Islands Horse Owners’ Association said that an inspection of the well was done yesterday and that work will begin today November 10, 2014 to bring the carcass out and cover the opening of the well.
“I understand that there may have been a hole somewhere that has been there for a number of years and there might have been some mishaps over the years. However it is being looked into and addressed to try to remedy the situation,” Smith said.
“The Horse Owners’ Association is taking the initiative to just cover it, using a couple of pieces of plywood. It is something that could be remedied very easily. We looked at it today and by tomorrow some workmen supposed to go there with a couple of pieces of lumber and address the problem,” he said.
At the time that this news site spoke with Smith, he said that it was his belief that Department of Waste Management had dealt with the removal of the dead animal. However on visiting the site some hours later, it was obvious that the animal had not yet been removed.
Attempts to reach officials from the Ministry of Education proved futile up to post time. However, an officer at the Department of Agriculture said that while they appreciated the call from this news site bringing them up to speed on the situation, it was not within their remit to deal with this matter.
A call by this news site to the Department of Waste Management revealed that they had not taken any action in terms of removing the horse.
"I would have to find out whether anyone was aware of the situation and if it would be possible to remove it," said David Maduro of the Department of Waste Management.

What the hell l.....e aint say the horse is his???? Ting to talk
Why the Government have to do everything for you???
I agree
It can't be THAT important if it's left in the open for innocent animals to fall to their death. The scent not bothering the "higher heads" so they could care less bout speeding up the process & remove it. What a shame
