ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Department of Disaster Management (DDM) has issued a warning to residents of the territory as a surface high pressure is expected to generate rough seas and light to moderate wind flow across the islands.

In a press statement, the DDM said that northerly swells will continue to affect the islands through the weekend.

It said that there were partly cloudy skies today and a few passing showers could also develop. It said that tonight there will be partly cloudy to cloudy with a chance of a few showers.

Seas, it said, will be moderately rough with waves of 1.5 to 2.4 metres or 5 to 8 feet. “An advisory remains in place for small craft operators and sunbathers. Winds were East to East South East at a speed of 10 -16 knots.

Watch for flags

The bulletin said that according to the Lifeguard Supervisor, beach safety flags are being used to signal potential trouble.
It said that Red Flags are flying at Trunk Bay, Rogues Bay, Josiah’s Bay, Lambert Beach, Little Bay and The Baths. It noted however that The Baths are still accessible by land.

It said Yellow Flags are flying at Smuggler’s Cove, Long Bay (Tortola), Capoon’s Bay, Cane Garden Bay and Brewer’s Bay.

In a comment to this news site today November 28, 2015, Director of the DDM Sharleen S. DaBreo said that the information regarding the yellow and red flags came directly from the lifeguard on duty who was able to make an assessment of the potential dangers of the area and erect the appropriate flags.

DaBreo said too that the weather information as presented comes not from the DDM directly but from the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service, which they treat as accurate.
