ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Deputy Commissioner of Police Mr Alwin A. James was among fourteen officers of the disciplined services of the Virgin Islands (VI) who were decorated with medals for long service and good conduct on the occasion of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Birthday celebration yesterday June 13, 2015 at the Festival Grounds in Road Town, Tortola.

All who arrived to witness the ceremony were given a red carpet welcome. The audience consisted of quite a number of children, some amount of visitors, and a large number of residents of the territory.

While less than half of the honourees present to receive their awards, six (6) of fourteen (14) to be exact, the honouring ceremony was a short one for the hundreds that turned out to join in  the celebrations which included, to the greater extent, the parading of the disciplined services. Several schools and local social groups also participated.

Medal recipients

Receiving the Second Clasp to the Overseas Territories Police Force Medal for Long Service and Good Conduct – 30 years- was Deputy Commissioner of Police Mr Alwin A. James.

Inspectors Marlon Leopold Charles, Tilda V. Henry and Ernest Gumbs all received First Clasp to the Overseas Territories Police Force Medal for Long Service and Good conduct – 25 years.

First Clasp to Overseas Territories Fire Service medal for Long Service and Good Conduct – 25 years- went to Fire Officer Dayron Daronville.

Overseas Territories Prison Service Medal for Long Service and Good Conduct – 18 years- went to Sergeant Jacquline Henley and Sergeant Beresford McLeary.

Among those who turned out for the celebration were just a handful of the territory’s leaders, including Premier and Minister of Finance Dr The Honourable D Orlando Smith, Deputy Governor Ms V Inez Archibald, Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Honourable Kedrick D. Pickering, Minister for Health and Social Development Hon Ronnie W. Skelton and At Large Representative without a portfolio Hon Archibald C. Christian.

Among the usual highlights was His Excellency the Governor John S. Duncan’s reading of the Birthday Greetings sent to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her response. He also told the gathering of the Queen’s recent acceptance of the traditional gift of a pound of salt from Salt Island.

    Yeah, the Queen just had these islands for her nobles to have plantations in these far lands to produce sugar for them to put in their "tay." Many people do not know that the Monarchy had slaves and ships which was involved in the slave trade. If the real history is told to our people, you would see how fast they stop singing God save our gracious Queen. Why we have to be honouring her in this fashion? She ever stopped to say, God bless the beautiful Virgin Islands? We need to wake up from this mental slavery, man.
