ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A programme initiated by the Ministry of Education and Culture to assess the status of youth unemployment and find jobs for them resulted in 155 young men and women registering on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 – the first day of the exercise.

Hon. Myron Walwyn, Minister for Education and Culture had revealed that there were 82 persons registered thus far when he was speaking at the 5th district representative Hon. Delores Christopher’s first community meeting which was held at the Sir. Rupert Briercliffe Hall last evening November 30. Premier Dr. D. Orlando Smith and At Large representative Hon. Archibald Christian were also at the meeting.

However, that figure was updated to reflect 155 at the end of the first day which was released on December 1, 2011 by the Government Information Service.

The registration process is being held at the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports and will wrap on December 12, 2011. Furthermore, Hon. Walwyn disclosed that forms will be made available online from today Thursday December 1, which will make it easier for those who don’t want to come into the office and those on the sister islands.

In explaining the initiative to the small group of residents, the Minister stated that with the individuals registering their names and skill sets, his Ministry will be able to work closely with the Labour Department “to try to match jobs to individuals because one of the things that we recognise is that we can’t continue to approve work permits for things that our young people could be doing.”

He added, “If we don’t get that problem under control you would not able to sleep at nights and we don’t want that in our country.”

YUR targets individuals between the ages of 18-30.

National wear and national song

The Culture Minister was blunt in stating that he found it interesting that during Culture Week the attire persons wore made them look like people “almost without an identity”, and in light of this, he plans to remedy the situation.

“Though simple it has to be addressed quickly. Other Caribbean islands have a national dress, and we looked like people almost without an identity because everybody had on pieces of cloth. It just did not look right,” he stressed.

“And one of the things we have done is putting a committee together to look at addressing the issue and bring it to Cabinet for approval for our national dress, so when we have our cultural activities it will be synonymous with the VI,” Hon. Walwyn further stated.

Notwithstanding that, a Territorial song is needed as well, the Minister added. “I believe it is time that our children understand the culture and the history of the islands.”

I hope there will be a competition for choosing a National Song. We have so much talent here in the BVI. There should be choices and not what was atttempted by the NDP before to make a particularsong the National Song when they were last in government. Let us promote and motivate our youth

it is not the official song. The NDP govt of the past was using it as one of their theme songs. I love the song but lets see if there are other potential national songs out there. so many talented young people here. lets allow them to shine

I applaud the Minister for this step with our young people, but I think we are jumping the gun. The first thing that needs to be done after December 12 is to have sessions with our young people to teach them Work Ethics. Most of them do not have a clue of what is expected at the work place, and so they must be educated first.

I applaude the Minister for his effort ,but first we must teach our young people the meaning of a job instead of having them look down on certain jobs because we all have to start some where, the man who is cleaning the streets are making a honest living and they are proud of their job because it pays the bills and provide for their famaily.I am what they call a born here and when i left school my firt job was working at the prospect reef hotel as a busboy and i graduated with a grade 1 certificate but all was concern about was getting a job tobe independent. from there went on to the Immigration dept. and today i'm selfemployed. But the days as a busboy at the hotel were my most memorable days having to sell my hotel and country knowing that at the end of my encounter i would be rewarded with a tip which was my purpose for giving good service.. I say this to say that the service industry is a good paying industry but we must first understand what is good service.
