ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- When the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) graduating class of 2019 gathers in the Multi-Purpose Sport Complex in Road Town, Tortola, today June 13, 2019, among the 97 graduands will be aspiring Accountant Daniella P. Mourillon, this year’s top student.

Described by her mother, Ann T. Mourillon, best known as “Maggie”, as a very focused person, Daniella has consistently excelled at all the schools and classes throughout her academic life. She had moved on from Ebenezer Thomas Primary School with a Grade 1 (ABB) and graduated as Salutatorian from the Elmore Stoutt High School.

The 19 year old’s accumulative GPA is in the vicinity of 3.95 but the official GPA will be announced at today’s graduation ceremony. Over the past two years, Daniella’s grades were as follows: First semester- 4.0 (all A’s), Second Semester - 4.0 (all A’s), Third Semester - 3.80 (4 A’s and 1 B +) and Fourth Semester - 4.0 (all A’s).

Proud mother

Emerging as the top student of HLSCC, however, did come as a surprise to her mother who was overcome with a feeling of great joy. “When I heard the news I was excited, I was lost for words, I literally screamed” said Mrs Mourillon.

She added, “I know she can work. At college, every term she was on the President’s List. I should not say I was surprised, I knew she would excel but yet I was surprised when I heard she topped, I couldn’t believe it.”

Following footsteps of success

“Maggie” said that while Daniella is a naturally brilliant child, the bar was set for her to follow back in 2013 by her brother Paul D. Mourillon who had topped the territory that year by gaining 9 Grade Ones and 2 Grade Twos at CXC. “Additionally we, her father (Polica Mourillon) and I, support them 100% not only financially but in every way, even with their spiritual life.”

“They have from us what we didn’t have growing up. We were less fortunate but we know the value of a sound education and we do our best for our children and they haven’t disappointed,” A proud Mrs Mourillon related to our newsroom.

Unlike her brother Paul, who is a “science person”, Daniella’s field of studies is in Accounting. She aspires to continue her studies in this field at the highest level; however, she is not yet quite sure how soon she will head off to university.

“If all goes well I plan to continue my studies this coming August. If not, the plan is to work until December and head off in January.”

Meanwhile, Acting Governor Mr David D. Archer is the Guest Speaker at today’s graduation ceremony set to start at 4:00pm. Briana Turnbull will do the duty of Student Respondent.

It is also the first time the HLSCC will be holding its graduation ceremony off campus.

Congratulations young lady, you have indeed worked hard and deserve all the accolades you will receive because of your achievements. You have now at the first level in becoming a fully qualified professional as a member of one of the professional accounting bodies, like the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants (ACCA), two of the UK bodies and Certified Public Accountants (CPA) a USA body or indeed any other similarly recognised bodies.
I only wish some of our young men would follow your example rather than riding around on these scooters with their pants half way off their “behinds” and being a menace with their lawlessness.
