Dance recital surpassed expectations & wowed
“The turnout was amazing. To be honest, I really didn't expect to see that many people. Seeing that it was our first recital, I thought that just family members and close friends were going to attend. Nevertheless, I am happy that many came to see what I've been working on with the students and thankful for the support you've shown the students and myself,” Ms. Sasha S. Creque, the Artistic Director.
It was Ms Creque’s first venture at a recital put together to display what the students have learnt in their respective tenures. It featured participants as young as 2 years old to 18 years old.
The recital had several genres of dance which included Ballet, Acrobatics, Hiphop and Contemporary. There was also a featured piece that displayed the effects of Domestic Violence.
Another special tribute was paid to Miss. Demiah O'Neal who passed away January 30th, 2014 at a fairly young age. She was one of the first students that Ms. Creque taught upon her return from her Dance studies. The tribute ended with Ms. Beckie Felician, Demiah's mom, being honoured in her daughter’s name.
Ms Creque said that she is a huge advocate for the cause of Domestic Violence and wanted to show everyone the effects of such behaviour through drama and dance.
“I am quite certain that my dancers did a great job at doing just that. As for the Tribute to Demiah O'Neal...it was hard watching my students perform this number; as it was the same one performed at Demiah's funeral. Just like all my students, I loved her so much. She was an amazing person inside and out; which made it so hard to accept the fact that she's no longer with us. The plaque presented to her mom carries a picture of Demiah's first performance at Christmas in Spanish Town and I wanted her to have it as a reminder of the fun times her daughter had with us.”
Near the end of the recital, a Graduation Award Ceremony was done to show appreciation to the students and formally allowing them to move onto the next level of dance studies. There were trophies awarded to each Top Performer within each Ballet Level and Acrobatics Class.
Those on the receiving end were; for Ballet B- Kayla Brathwaite, Ballet A- Shavia Potter, Ballet 1- Abigail Liburd and Acrobatics- Shavia Potter and Valerie Nibbs. There was an Overall Top Performer Award which was presented to Shavia Potter.
"Shavia deserved this award. She joined the Adagio family in January 2014 and since then she has been on a mission to master the art. Not only that but she assists me with the Pre-School classes on Saturdays, she's a straight A' student and she learns choreography very quickly. I'm just blown away at how far she has come within the few months of having her," said Ms Creque.
Trophies and Certificates were also given for Best Behaviour, Academics, Teacher's Assistant and Most Improved Student.
When asked who Ms. Creque would like to thank she simply said everyone who lent a hand in making the show successful. “We are a family at Adagio and the parents are the ones mainly to thank for all the work they've done and allowing me the opportunity to teach their children,” said the young Artistic Director.
The show also featured 'Tunehouse'; guest performers, who performed an amazing Hip Hop number.
