C&W Minister suffering from “fatigue”, says Wheatley

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - In the middle of a topic that can be regarded as the most popular topic in the Virgin Islands (VI), the cruise ship pier expansion project, host of Speak out BVI, Doug Wheatley stated that although the Hon. Mark Vanterpool is doing a good job as ‘point man’ he seems to be suffering from fatigue.

This comment was made during the airing of the show last evening, July 18, 2012.

On matters of importance within the Territory, such as the expansion of the cruise ship pier, in relation to informing the people of what is being done, how is it going to be done and what is the cost for it to be done, Mr. Wheatley said that the Minister of Communications and Works is doing a good job with keeping the people up to date.

He added that with the Minister listening to the cries of the public, in relation to those for and against the expansion project, the Minister is doing an excellent job as ‘point man’, but is now suffering from “a little bit of fatigue.”

In light of this, the radio talk show host stated that his reason for his statement is a result of Hon. Vanterpool being a guest on another popular radio show.

“When a caller called in and asked something, he used a term and I heard him use it before.”

Mr. Wheatley said that Hon. Vanterpool stated on the talk show, “I am not going to mince my words on this; I am going to say straight what it is.”

Wheatley reiterated that from Hon. Vanterpool making such a comment, it poses as a clue that he is suffering from fatigue.

He stated, “that can happen to all of us”.

Then again, as far as I understand you always have a problem with the NDP. Everything they do and say somehow do tickle your fancy, but let them do their work. Try to support them in any way you can. This is the Government in power and if you cant be a help in moving this country forward, please dont be a hindrance. I respect you, but you seem to be like Frett or maybe you are related. Just saying.

From my days running track in secondary school, I learnt that one cannot run a race without proper preparation and strategic planning. You will as the millennials say get smoked. Running a business has a few similarities to governing. In business you meet the needs and satisfaction of your targeted customer base. But in government you have to meet the needs and expectations of the whole population; a much more challenging and difficult task. Nonetheless, like in athletics, one has to have an effective game plan. After the election and after the ministries were divved up and the starter pistol shot, Mark, the action man, and a few other ministers took off at a full sprint. It appears as if they were competing to see who could put the most balls in the air. None of these ministers have had any experience governing; and the inexperience is glaring. They are making too many rookie mistakes. By comparison, the ministers with governing experience are proceeding deliberately. A minister or any other manager/leader's success is measured not by action or the number of balls in the air but by positive outcomes/results. What Mark should do and should have done is take a pause, call a time out or plan a standdown. And during this period, leave the egos and other issues at the doors, learn the lay of the land, learn from civil servants how governement works, learn the work processes, understand the problems ......etc. More importantly he needs to observe. And having done all these things, formulate a game plan for planning, organizing, directing and controlling the ministry. Keeping it real. He had some missteps, especially in project planning. There is an elephant in the room that many may be thinking about but do not want to touch it with a 10M pole. That elephant is succession planning. Who will succeed the Premier when he decides to exit stage left. That will work itself out. The focus now needs to be building a diverse, sustainable economy to maintain the high quality of life and standard of living that Virgin Islanders currently enjoy. Is he burnt out? Mark, his family and healthcare professionals should make that determination. Ministerial positions are high stressed positions. Let offer our prayers to Mark and other ministers, as well as other elected officials .

My concern about these Ministers is, they are attempting to please every body and will end up pleasing no body. I am amaized at how these projects are being approached. One would imagine that once the concept and viability were carefully examined and found to be sound, the next step would have been to clear it with the ultimate decision maker, {the FCO]. At the end of the day, if the UK says no, you are stuck!! This is the problem which confronts us with both the Airport and the Sea Port projects. Pickering knows that the Airport project will not fly and therefore Mark needs to take note and act accordingly.
