ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The daughter of a well-known businessman who owns a roadside food van in Road Town was fined $1,500 after she admitted to obtaining a cake dishonestly at RiteWay Food Markets in Pasea Estate on March 11, 2019.
Shaika Jeffers had to pay the fine immediately or risk spending months at Her Majesty’s Prison.

Prosecutors said Jeffers and Akil Turnbull, who was also charged for the same offence but pleaded not guilty, along with two underage boys, removed the price label on an $80 cake and exchanged it with a price label on another cake valued at $24.

Jeffers then headed for the cashier and left with the cake.

The youngsters were later seen on surveillance footage by the supermarket’s Information Technologist, who then reported the matter to police.

‘You should have known better

Before handing down her sentence on Wednesday, September 25, 2019, Magistrate Ayanna O. Baptiste-DaBreo said being part of a family business, Jeffers should have known to do better.

Jeffers, who was unrepresented, pleaded with the court for mercy.

“I am not proud because I grew up knowing better,” she said, adding that she was yielding to peer pressure and just “goofing off” to see if they could get away with the act.

“I just wanted to see what would happen, I ask for some leniency,” she said.

Apart from the fine, the youngster was told to repay RiteWay the balance of $56 for the cake.

In the meantime, Turnbull is scheduled to make his second appearance for the start of his trial on October 17, 2019, along with the minors who were also jointly charged with the offence.

It have a lot to do with this, she’s boldly judging women for their decision in taking fathers to court not knowing what struggling mothers are going through and look at her trying to pay less. Maybe she needs the child support money herself. Don’t judge cause you never what may happen to you

I agree with you. Condemning others left right and centre and instead of doing her thing the right way her choice was to steal. To thief. Wonderful example for her own children. And that's is the karma she preached about on facebook. Judgmental fool. A thief.

He knew better, and still did it, and then had the nerve to ask for mercy? No way! Stealing is not a joke and they need to be taught a lesson.

This youth should be familiar with surveillance cameras by now. Big Brother is always watching. If she switched labels in a London supermarket she would have been arrested at the check out.

So she ended up paying out more than the cost of the actual cake. When we are tempted to do wrong we must fight that urge and do what is right. Say no to peer pressure! It saves us a lot of pain/embarrassment in the long run. Move on from this lesson lady and do what is right.

I read her post that she made that the news changed the story..... and seriously they did and Riteway could have done better. From what I understand, she went to cashier and cashed the cake and on her way out the security knew that the cake was not value at $24 because it was to big. So from what I understand before she even left with the cake they knew. They could have just allowed her to pay the difference and leave but instead the manager wanted this to be known public. What she did may have been wrong but they could have done better. Don't body aint blasting Riteway for ridiculous prices and robbing people. PS Tortola needs price control (just saying).
