VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI – The issue of safety and security has become a growing concern of residents of the Virgin Gorda Community of late as they have been noticing a rise in criminal activities there.

They said primarily breaking and entering and other forms of robberies have been recorded as they told political leaders of at least two stores being robbed in one week.

At a community meeting held on the Island on June 18, 2014 one resident took to the microphone and spoke of growing concern, mentioning the two stores being robbed.

The forms of the robberies were not explained as to whether they were done as simple larcenies, gun point or otherwise but according to the resident if nothing is done in short order there is every likelihood that the safety and security status that Virgin Gorda once boasted of will cease to exist.

"The calypsonian say don’t be afraid to open your mouth so I am saying it now because if we don’t the community will continue the recession downfall,” the resident said, pointing out that the two stories were hit within days of each other.

Chairman of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Honourable Julian Fraser RA (R3) in response to the concern raised said that due to the sensitivity of this issue, it would be best handled out of the public’s hearing.

“The issue of crime that was raised, we are all aware that we are having issues with crime in the community. However it is a very sensitive matter and we try our best to deal with it that discussion in-camera. So the fact that you might not hear anyone of us here expound upon the concern it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist and we are not aware of it,” said Hon Fraser.

Well it is time to desensitize the issue and let everyone know we have a problem and deal with it, 0 tolerance for any crimes committed on our visitors. If you bury your heads and hope it will go away on its own we are going to end up like our neighbours. The public need to be informed about this rising concern loudly and publicly.

Years ago Barbados went through an increase in petty crime. The source was thought to be all the migrant workers on the island Constructing several new resorts and hotels. My taxi driver told me the men come from away, find local girl friends and now have to send money home plus support their local girlfriend and now they have no money for themselves so they shoplift, break and enter, etc.
