ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The traffic buildup usually seen in the heart of Road Town in the workweek afternoons is expected to be resolved with the introduction of a third land lane heading west on Waterfront Drive.

Construction works have commenced on the additional third lane project in the Traffic Enhancement and Improvement programme in Road Town following the signing of a contract on June 29, 2020.

Minister for Transportation, Works and Utilities, Honourable Kye M. Rymer (R5) said the project which begins on July 7, 2020, is being undertaken by contractors Accurate Construction and Jason Fonseca and will have a duration of approximately ten (10) weeks, according to a press release from the Department of Information and Public Affairs.

Honourable Rymer said work will commence in the vicinity of the Waterfront Taxi Stand and traffic light at the intersection of Administration and Waterfront Drive.

He said, “The works will include the removal and replacement of the existing sidewalks; construction of pedestrian-friendly sidewalks; construction of a new lane heading westward; a bus layby to facilitate the picking up of persons heading west; drainage improvement along the entire project and asphalt overlay.”

Limited Parking on Waterfront Drive

This project follows Premier and Minister of Finance, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie’s (R1) remarks on the Government’s ongoing economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic which includes putting measures in place to address the traffic congestion in the capital city Road Town, Tortola.

The public is advised that as a result of the works, there will be limited parking at the Road Town Jetty Terminal parking lot across from Pusser’s in Road Town and caution should be exercised while traversing this area.

The Government of the Virgin Islands is now in Phase Two of the ongoing economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, the recent re-routing of traffic in Road Town has also helped to significantly ease the long-standing issue of traffic congestion.

I think the additional lane is a good idea and that Mr. Rymer has the traffic issues under control. What I don't understand is what does the traffic have to do with covid-19.

Bs,, waste of tax payers money. Makes no sense. Since Irma there are more important roads in the country hills area to be fixed. Some one will soon fall off the side going country. Again we in hurricane season and you going to mess with low lying Road Town!!!!

Congestion? Live West Side for decades. Only time there is congestion on that road is when we going to petition the governor on a matter. And even then we know to use the already created solution - Paul Wattley road. Covid-19 ?, Covid 19? Ok I'm very lost.

How about the third lane being reversable? One way in A.M. and the other in P.M.?????? The big problem is parking. No raod changes will help that. Regulate cars (one on island ='s one off)?, Two vhicles to a family (except businesses)?, Garges at each end of town and a system that requires all day workers to use these designated places?, Get rid of derelict vehilcles, car wash and oy=ther businesses that take up parking and reqyuire ALL NEW business/buildings to provide parking for all prospective employees/visitors.

Great job!..Hon. Rymer but I also feel that you do need to look at those hillside roads on Tola and VG and evening JVD that do not have protective walls.. this can save lives.. let’s not forget those accidents that happened on that Purcell road going country and the North Sound to Valley road.. so plz Hon. Rymer look at this as well .. we know the roads but still poses A danger ..

The vision of the Honourable minister of Communication and Works should be commended. As a first time Legislator he has done well. The flow of traffic in Road Town is heartening, especially when they are flowing west. However, I want to urge drivers to exercise care, courtesy, commonsense and consideration for other drivers.

Pedestrian crossing is what causing most traffic congestion. its like every 10 seconds someone crossing taking their time. Traffic stop... back up.... Control psdestrian crossing....Put pedestrian crossing lights... Every 3 minues it allows 20 seconds for crossing.. So crossing can be done in groups. Not one by one every 3 seconds...

And the crossings by the roundabout need to be put at least 20 yards back from the roundabout - To give at least three cars an opportunity to enter the roundabout, rather than hold up all the traffic waiting for (slow) pedestrians to cross the road.....

......I really hope the road that the gov't wants tourists to drive on coming from the airport, the many tourists they try to attract, the many tourists that rent vehicles and feel our pain on....East End roads are next! I've been asking for many many years, is the gov't comfortable welcoming visitors to the island like this? The East reps aren't doing anything about it...try help us out please!
