ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Haitian national, Marie Sanette-Donnat, 26, was granted bail in the sum of $30,000 today, September 20, 2013 when she appeared in the Magistrate's Court for allegedly stealing one Kindle Fire tablet device.

Sanette-Donnat, who is also a Belonger, pleaded not guilty and told the court that she would represent herself in the matter. She has reportedly lived in the Territory since 2004.

According to the allegations, the Virtual Complainant (VC), Beverly Smith, was a customer at Riteway on Fleming Street on June 15, 2013 when she reported to the manager that someone stole her Kindle Fire which was left at a cashier’s counter where she paid for her items.

Security footage was reviewed and it was established that the defendant, who was the third customer after the VC, had allegedly taken up the Kindle fire and its case. The Kindle Fire was allegedly stolen, along with a brown leather case, and both items were valued at a total cost of $280.

Sanette-Donnat, while paying for groceries, allegedly placed three cans of corn on the Kindle Fire and paid the cashier for her items before leaving with the device.

A police officer, conducting investigations on June 24, 2013 through interviews and video footage, met the defendant at the Waterfront and informed her of the report against her. Sanette-Donnat was cautioned and arrested but allegedly made no reply at the time.

The defendant, who is also a Crafts Alive vendor, was later transported to the Road Town Police Station and processed and served a copy of her rights in her native language.

A search was later conducted at the defendant’s home at Purcell Estate and 2 black Kindle Fire devices were allegedly taken into police custody. On June 25, 2013 at 7:45 P.M. the VC positively identified the device by the serial number and the imprint on the cover case.

Sanette-Donnat allegedly confessed on June 24, 2013 in a video interview that she was the person who had stolen the device and was charged later the same day. She reportedly has no prior offences.

She is required to submit all travel documents and report three times per week to the Road Town Police Station. The matter will next be heard on November 12, 2013.

She does not live in Haiti, she lives here and is a belonger. What is wrong with people? I know times are hard but I am not going to jail for wanting something that is not mine.

Sorry to say that she is a shame for her family and her country. For $250.00 she tarnishes her reputation like that in foreign land. Shame on you, shame on you .

Point is? She here where her behind have life 100x better than she would back in haiti & this the thx she showing by stealing ppl stuff? The honest thing when she realized that beverly left her belongings would have been to call out to her or try stopping her. She could've bring it to the attn of the cashier or managment but to go the length of taking it up & hiding it shows she knew what she was doing & had no intention of giving the owner back what belonged to her

She is and Idiot. She need to learn how to steel, now you will pay, and how you can plead guilt and come around and say not guilty. It's either you learn Engilsh or learn how to steel properly. lol lol

      Thanks for the laugh.
What I laughing at? At you calling the person an idiot while saying that they should learn English. Seems you don't know it too well, since you using 'steel' instead of 'steal'. Steel is an inanimate material used in various type of construction. You already know what 'Steal' is, you just don't know how to spell it.

She here from 2004 and have belonger status, how is that possible, is he married to a BVIslander? It have people living in the BVI for over 20 and even 30 years, applied for this status and all now they dont have it so tell me how this woman got belonger status and she only here for 9 years. What about these children who were born here and cant get status until they make 18 years. What kinda BS I hearing here. Something is so wrong.

Because people in the VI are so gullable Bellonger Status is now a tainted status, Its being given away like water. children born here have status dont mind the noise it depends on which status they want.

The first question is how in the world does this woman become a belonged? If she is a visitor in our country and was granted such a privilege to become a belonger in 9 years she should not be stealing things that do not belong to her!!!

Send her back home if she cannot respect our laws! She is also very arrogant after being caught on camera. Tax payers have to subsidize a craft Alive booth for this thief! She should be asking for the mercy of the court, apologize and buy the woman a new kindle

This woman here for nine years, have belonged status and a shop in Craft Alive Village. I was born in TORTOLA, went to school here, work here all my life and I can't get space in Craft Alive. Maybe I should ask her who she knows that I don't. So you see folks being born in the BVI don't always have its advantages, sometimes we are at a disadvantage. Maybe I should go to Haiti and try opening a business. I might have better luck. When I go to Crafts Alive , I see people from almost every Caribbean island. I wanted a space in there but no luck. There is no honour for a man in his own country.

Stop it!! All of these people were already vendors at the cruise pier before they were removed. They used to operate in a tent city. Remember? They had to pack up and unpack every day. Remember? They had to suffer from thieves and still suffering. Remember? They suffer the sweat and tears. Remember? So now the government build a site for them, you don't think the pioneers deserved it?

she allegdly made a mistake - she allegedly thought it was her kindle fire as it looked like hers. On arriving home and noticing that she still had hers, she was about to consult her voodoo priest to locate the owner, then boom! the cops arrived.,....

I would like to ask the question... If i find something on the road, did i steal it? If you careless and leave your crap in the store and i pick it up...did i steal it? how many of us leave our phones, purse, wallet even keys somewhere and come back to get it and it gone...so the person stole it? She didnt take it off the person body, out their house or their car. that lady left her thing in the super market and saying the lady stole her thing and all you jack aces now come on talking about haiti and belonger and all sorts of nonsense...sigh... i despair for the ppl in this place.

If it's one thing you said that I agree with - it's that if you forget something somewhere and I pick it up, I didn't steal it. So you're right, Beverly should have been more careful.
