ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Akeem Richardson and Kandy James, a couple who tried to terminate the pregnancy of Mr. Richardson’s ex-girlfriend in 2010, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and administering a poison or other noxious thing with the intent to procure a miscarriage when they appeared in the High Court this morning, Tuesday October 18, 2011.

Against this backdrop, the duo will be sentenced on November 8.

Crown Counsel Sarah Benjamin told the court that she did not want the pair to interfere with the Virtual Complainant (VC) in no shape or form. The VC who was in court indicated that she was not afraid of the couple.

And though she objected to them remaining on bail until they are sentenced, Judge Indra Hariprashad-Charles allowed the defendants to go home but cautioned them to stay away from the VC.

Richardson 25, and James 31 are both on $30,000 cash bail and $40,000 signed surety each.

According to court records, it is alleged that Mr. Richardson along with Ms. James forced his ex-pregnant girlfriend – the VC - to drink some pills and inserted some in her private parts.

According to the Crown, the VC who was 17 years-old and five months pregnant, went to a Road Town hotel with Mr. Richardson where she drifted off to sleep.

Shortly after that, the VC reported that she felt someone sat on her and another person placed her in a chokehold. She identified that it was then Mr. Richardson allegedly placed some tablets in her mouth and while struggling she was able to spit some out, but she swallowed a few.

The other individual who was holding the VC placed some tablets in her private parts. The incident allegedly occurred on February 28, 2010.

The maximum sentence for assault is five years, while intent to procure an abortion carries a seven year sentence.
