ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Cordell A. E. O'Neal is likely to be at liberty in approximately three years after his seven years, ten months prison sentence was significantly cut in the Court of Appeal on Friday February 3, 2017.

There is also the possibility of him being released earlier should he find favour with the administration of Her Majesty's Prison who can grant him an early release, especially on the grounds of good behaviour and reform.

Attorney at Law E. Leroy Jones plugged arguments in the Court of Appeal when the matter was heard by Justices Janice M. Periera, Paul Webster and Mario Mitchell‎.

Jones’ argued that senior Magistrate Tamia N. Richards, who sentenced his client, was unjust in imposing the sentences to be run consecutively as opposed to concurrently, and that she failed to grant O'Neal the lawful one third discount on the grounds that his client pleaded guilty at the earliest possible time.

Jones himself had found himself in trouble with Richards after representing O'Neal in court the day of his sentencing. She had ordered Jones out of her courtroom after he had an exchange of words with one of the police officers assigned to the court and had insisted on making a case for his stance claiming the officer was disrespectful in the manner in which she spoke to him.

Reduced sentence

‎The reduced sentence is now five years six months. It was on March 16, 2015 he was sentenced in the Magistrate's Court to seven years, ten months imprisonment after pleading guilty to the charges of possession of an unlicenced firearm, possession of explosives and possession of a prohibited weapon.

For having an unlicenced firearm, O'Neal was sentenced to 24 months; for possession of explosives, he was sentenced to four months and for possession of a prohibited weapon, he was sentenced to five and a half years for a total of seven years, ten months since the sentences were to run consecutively.

O’Neal had pleaded guilty to three counts of unlawful possession of explosives/ammunition when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court at Prospect Reef on January 23, 2015.

Your comment is the reason why this society isnt helpful when it comes to Rehabilitation! Thats why there are a lot of persons transitioning back into society, who can't find jobs, housing, etc all because we paint them black and leave them so. Its our society's lack of support an overlooked factor why persons re-offend! Every one deserves a second chance!

Never rejoicing for anyone who is imprisoned but crime must be met with fair punishment. He got off lucky and should consider himself to be very fortunate. This is one of the only modern, civilized places that I've seen where an individual can face charges such as these and still walk free in less than 5 years time. Cordell, brother I can only hope that you realize this chance you've been given and take it for all it's worth.

Just hope this young man decides to clean up his act and sort out where his bad behavior is coming from and make a change for the better. He can be an example for others who are in similar situations. Search your soul to find out where the anger is coming from and deal with it. You come from a lovely and respectable family, make them proud, make yourself proud, you can do it!
