LONG BUSH, Tortola, VI - A Long Bush family had a horrific near death experience yesterday afternoon, August 27, 2016 when large amounts of the concrete ceiling of their apartment came crashing down.

The apartment is located on Blyden Alley and Long Bush main road just opposite the BVI Electricity Corporation.

According to sources close to the situation, three members of the family were rushed to Peebles Hospital, including two children, having suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Not wanting to say much of the incident, a close relative and a neighbour told this news site, "They [the children] are ok, nothing much, they are ok."

It is not clear how many persons were in the home at the time of the incident but when this news site visited the apartment building, large amounts of debris from the collapsed ceiling were still on the floor.

There were several cracks on other parts of the building as well, including the outer overhead out lay.

The building is evidently very old and houses several businesses as well as residential apartments.

"Well like you can see here it is residents’ apartment and business too. This could have been so much worse. This whole building could come down the same way because as you can see it kinda old and crack-up all over," said a neighbour.

The man said that while he wishes the family a speedy recovery, the authorities should immediately condemn the building and have all the other occupants evacuated immediately.

Word to the family, seek a lawyer please proceed and sue the landlord. You are within your rite to do so. All thwse uears they collecting rwnt from you and not improving the living conditions of the building. Even if they did a little renkvarion they pass on the expense to the tenant. Worthless lanlords in the BVI with no law to safe guard tenants.

So you would rather have a building that is unsafe remain standing and inhabited by expatriates who can do any better for the sake of the economy? That's inhumane! Greed going set this country afire!

It is a common thing here. Many people are living under deplorable conditions in rental apartments. The Landlords collect their payment every month and thats it. Ok, so why they cannot move out? Simple because most cannot afford the high price of these apartments. I know of cases, where persons were given eviction notices by their Landlords, who told them that they were going to renovate the property. As soon as they leave, the same Landlords rent the same place to other persons at a higher rate without not even adding a coat of paint on the walls. Don't hold your breathe on Laws to deal with this problem about 99.9 % of the persons who are Landlords can vote so which Politician will raise the issue?

Sorry to hear of the victims and pray they recover without any long lasting effects. This is so sad. Hope this building will be rendered unsafe and ordered vacated immediately. The structure has run its time. That was yesterday and was sudden. What next is waiting to happen ?

I hope that the kids are safe and had not suffer any major injuries. But there are too many of those type of building exist in the BVI and people are collecting rent for them. There need to be an aggressive building Inspection to prevent any future incident.
