DUFFS BOTTOM, Tortola, VI – Led by 20 points from Marquise Leonard, College Boys recorded a second win of the weekend, 100-64, over Real Tool in the Hon. Julian Fraser/Save the Seed National Intermediate League on Sunday September 15, 2013.

The first quarter at the Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duffs Bottom had proved an even affair with Justin Solomon finishing a powerful drive to the basket with an emphatic shot that made it 18-18. However, just before the buzzer sounded Tyree Maduro made a couple of free throws and a 2 pointer to give the College a slight four point advantage.

Mid way through the second quarter, they had extended that lead to 10 points before a lengthy delay at the scoring table, which involved both coaches and the referees and seemed to centre on the accuracy of how the fouls were being recorded. Whatever the outcome of the debate was, it appeared to galvanise the team from HLSCC as they romped into complete supremacy and a lead of 19 with 2:40 left in the half.

Not even a time out by Real Tool Coach, Milton McLean could lift the heads of his dispirited team as they began to stare another heavy defeat in the face. The lead once again increased at the resumption to 23 points, before, finally, Llewellyn Desant and then Solomon got Real Tool back on the scoreboard.

An exclamation mark was applied to a very strong second quarter performance from College Boys by Leonard as he splashed a big 3 from way downtown at the buzzer to make the score 59-31.

The third quarter came and went with much the same one way traffic and ended 82-43.

The final period was punctuated by some more agitation from both players and coaches at the replacement referees calls, although apart from one only being equipped with an almost inaudible whistle, there seemed little reason for complaint. Perhaps the “commentator” making wrong description on plays and adding controversial comment without cause aided the small confusions.

Both teams received Technical Fouls during the last 7 minutes of the period; Real Tool for use of an expletive on an attempted, but missed timed layup and shot and the College Boys for a substitution confusion leading them to only have four players on court, but all that was really of interest was whether Real Tool would concede 100 points for the fourth game in a row.

They duly did with 4 seconds left on the clock, but at least had the privilege of knocking in a 3 pointer to make the final score 100-64.

Apart from Leonard’s 20 point effort, the College Boys also got 18 with 6 rebounds from Shakeem Freeman, 12 points from Kaleem Scatliffe and 10 points with 5 rebounds from Kamal Brown.

Solomon top scored for Real Tool with 22 points and 13 rebounds, whilst Relando Rogers scored 8 and also was awarded 13 rebounds. Both Dillon Etienne and Devon Blaize also scored 8 with Etienne adding 6 rebounds and 6 assists.

The College Boys had also beaten the Knights 73-69 as the weekend’s action got underway on Friday Night. Freeman top scored with 25 points and 10 rebounds, Scatliffe added 12 points, Carlisle France 8 and Maduro 7.

For the Knights, Jevon Serrant doubled with 29 points and 17 rebounds as did Naldo, who notched 15 and 12. Nigel added 7 points and 10 rebounds whilst Kelon Fortune finished with 7 points and 4 rebounds.

The first game on Friday, September 13, 2013 saw the Avengers beat Da 3rd 104-96 with Ricky Conner picking up a double of 19 points and 16 rebounds. However, Garvin Frett topped the scoring with 34 points to go with 8 rebounds and Shaheed Collins scored 23. James Stoutt finished with 18.

For Da 3rd Rushawn Johnson picked up 34 points and 15 rebounds for a double, Nikita Naval scored 22 with 12 rebounds for his double and Jonfre Fernandez scored 20 points. Mikel Todman rounded out the top scorers with 15.

On Saturday, the 9-12 junior division continued to suffer issues with players not being available or on time and the first game ended in forfeiture to West Young Gunners over Wet.

The second junior game saw Young Stars beat Swaggas 30-16, with Elroy Rollers scoring 9 points to lead his team to the win. Isiah Thomas scored 7 and Eric Bobb recorded 11 rebounds as the Stars dealt with their smaller opponents in some comfort.

Malacki Smith and Antwon Robinson both scored 4 for Swaggas.

Back in senior action, West Gunners took apart Gilas 95-69 in large part due to 27 points from Dashan Hodge, Kyle Abraham scored 19 points with 8 rebounds, Alexander Jarvis finished with 11 points and Delvin Leonard completed a double with 10 points and 15 rebounds.

For Gilas, Tyrone Tyson notched a double of 23 points and 16 rebounds, Riquan Fahie added 11 points with 9 rebounds, Lucky Reyes 10 points and Damian Hooper 8 points with 6 rebounds.

Game Boyz continued to make the rest of the league take note as a 3 pointer from Nelhasi Chalwell right at the end gave his team a 95-92 win over Top Shottas. Chalwell finished with 27 points and both Jubal Jones and Shaquille Fonseca added doubles with 26 points, 13 rebounds and 18 points, 12 rebounds respectively.

For Top Shottas, Tyrone Donovan scored 24 points, Benson Thomas 18 with 9 rebounds, Ephraim Gordon 12 and Alliston Leonard 9 with 7 rebounds.

To conclude the weekend, Ruff House beat Da 3rd 84-77 and the Knights beat Talk Done 89-81.

The Knights were led by Nigel Todman’s double of 21 points and 33 rebounds as well as a double from Serrant who made 31 points and 16 rebounds. Keno Gumbs and Fortune both added 11.

Glenal Layne added a double of his won for the losing Talk Done, including 21 points and 12 rebounds whilst Clint Weston also doubled with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Kevon Lettsome finished with 22 points.

League standings have not yet been made available but the organizers do say they will be released soon.
