ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- BVI Football Association (BVIFA) Executive Member Avanell “Clarky” Morton has been appointed a member of the Caribbean Football Union’s Development and Technical Committee.

Confirmation of his appointment to the Committee was announced by BVIFA President, Andy Bickerton at the conclusion of the opening ceremony for the BDO/LIME School League which took place on the A.O. Shirley Ground on Wednesday January 30, 2013.

“How many people here know Clark,” he asked the crowd, with a general response from the youth players “everyone of course!”

Bickerton then called Morton forward and informed him of the appointment. “We are absolutely delighted for this recognition for a hard working man,” stated Bickerton. “The post is for 4 years,” he continued “and the really good thing about this is that “Clarky” is going to work hard on getting regional competition for u12 and u15’s.”

Morton in his response, and in his usual unassuming manner, just responded on how proud a moment it was for him, but immediately turned his attention to the gathered young players and parents “it is a proud and happy moment for me to see so many children out today and I just want to thank them, their teachers and their parents for making this league a success. Children when you play, play fear free and happy!”

The CFU is the 25-country regional union that encompasses the islands of the Caribbean. The term of appointment is until 2016.

The chair of the Committee is Luis Hernandez Herra (Cuba) and other members are Mark Wade (Bar), Rignaal Francisca (Curacao), Everton Tomlinson (Jamaica), Joselyn Germe (Martinique), Alastair Edwards (St. Kitts) and Venold Coombs (St. Vincent).

The goal of the Committee is to improve and ensure the effective planning and execution of all of the Union’s competitions through offering advice to the Executive Committee by undertaking the development of the format, venues and draws for CFU tournaments. Additional responsibilities include

  • a) development of the game in the Caribbean;
  • b) draw up recommendations on national team and club issues, football image, and other football-related matters which have an impact on the game in the Caribbean;
  • c) act as ambassadors/representatives of CFU at senior, youth and grassroots activities, courses and conferences;
  • d) produce different technical reports for all CFU tournaments;
  • e) draw up recommendations regarding possible modifications to the existing competitions and to the regulations governing these competitions;
  • f) assist the Executive Committee in the process of selecting the host association(s) of the CFU competitions;
  • g) monitors the qualifying and final rounds of all of the CFU male competitions;
  • h) assists in defining the draw principles and monitors the preparation and conducting of draws; and
  • i) advise on the format for CONCACAF qualifying competitions in the Caribbean.

“Clarky” has been an elected member of the BVIFA Executive for twelve years and began as the Players Representative until moving into a more administrative role. According to him, his most influential achievements have been in the development of Youth and Women’s Football.

Mr Morton has also been the Chair of the Virgin Gorda Football League for 20 years.

As a player, “Clarky” was the undisputed finest goalkeeper in the Territory and represented the National team for over 14 years “probably the highlight was being part of the side that won the Leeward’s Championship in 1986, beating Antigua in the Final,” he said.

He was also a member of the American Eagles team that was made up of not only BVI based players but also those from other Caribbean Islands and that travelled Worldwide to take part in tournaments.

The BVIFA and the Territory as a whole can certainly be proud that “Clarky” has been appointed as a member of the Committee as it continues to show that the BVIFA is becoming respected for its professionalism and administration of the game.
