ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - City Manager, Mrs Janice E. L. Braithwaite-Edwards is calling on heavy equipment operators to refrain from parking or leaving containers in unauthorised areas in Road Town.

According to a Government Information Services (GIS) press release issued on May 30, 2018, Mrs Braithwaite-Edwards stated that her office is continuing efforts to ensure that “there is adequate parking in Road Town and one of the challenges faced is that of illegal parking".

Mrs Braithwaite-Edwards said that it is illegal to park on Crown land without authorisation and that her office is moving forward with reinstating fences in these areas to minimise this occurrence. She is also reminding persons to refrain from parking illegally within the confines of the city and to be mindful of how vehicles are parked to maximise space, especially during the day.

No parking zone

She added that NO PARKING zones for unauthorised heavy equipment and containers include (but is not limited to):

Lower Estate Sugar Works

Festival Grounds

Central Administration Complex (east and seaside)

Plot of land behind Jalaya Place

North of the Fire Headquarters

Lower Estate sidewalks

Parking Lot adjacent Peebles Hospital

Road Laybys

Government Spokeswomen Nekita Turnbull noted that “Permission should be sought from the Office of the City Manager for temporary offloading space in Road Town. For more information, please contact the City Manager by telephone at 441-8800."

People need to understand that the lanes between spaces in the lots outside FCIB and outside Labour/Immigration are not parking spaces. The town manager needs to buy a two truck and take away the badly parked cars - ideally crushing them rather than returning them to the owners.

We’ll see if this comes to pass. With so many very important issues to be worked out first, is this really going to happen?

Blame TCP and their lack of enforcement and the connected few who chose to flaunt planning regulations and this is the end result! Since NDP went in they been toying around with multi-storied parking facilities. Several groups submitted concepts (some workable; others not) and the subject minister has just sat on it and done nothing. Shows that persons’ true commitment to developing the town!!

Why not invest in parking meters? Hire persons to check and enforce these meters - win win for everyone! It’s not rocket science!! Have specific times and demarcated areas for un-loading goods. As for the food vendors - utilize the Festival grounds for them that way there’s plenty parking and space for the crowds. That land is under-utilized and those vendors need a suitable location especially after the storms displaced so many businesses.

Seems like the current government has issues thinking outside the box and taking on any meaningful recommendations unless it lines their own bank accounts for life!

Why don't you put up a sign or two to give greater guidance to people as to where you can and can't park.

I have always taken the view that you can park wherever you want in the BVI. I assumed that was correct, but now don't know where I am allowed to park.

How about removing derelict vehicles from parking spaces. The parking lot adjacent to Burhym has about 6 vehicles that are damaged and left parked there day after day since Irma. They seem to be increasing in numbers as well.
Can this sore sight be removed so that the spaces can be utilized adequately?
