DUFFS BOTTOM, Tortola, VI - Caribbean Insurers Limited (CIL) spearheaded a coastline cleanup together with a mangrove replanting exercise along the stretch from Prospect Reef to Duffs Bottom, Tortola to mark the occasion of Earth Day On Wednesday April 22, 2015.

Armed with garbage bags and gloves, the team of persons cleaned from Prospect Reef to Duffs Bottom, Tortola, not paying any attention to the scorching sun at 2:00pm.

Speaking at the clean-up exercise, Director of Marketing at CIL Simone T. Monsanto said the effort which she was responsible for putting together also saw the Environmental Club of the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) being invited to join in the exercise.

"We at Caribbean Insurers Limited are not only about insurance but we want to make sure we engage in community activities as well. So we decided on doing this together with Conservation and Fisheries and we’ve invited the Environmental Club of the Elmore Stoutt High School,” said Monsanto.

Managing Director of CIL Mr Brian W. Jermyn said that for Earth Day, the company decided this was something it wanted to do.

“We at Caribbean Insurers Limited decided to get together with some of our friends, like Conservation and Fisheries to plant a few mangroves. Mangroves are not only good for water life but also good for the island as a whole. If there are big waves of tsunamis they provide protection. And at the same time we have some people from the high school and they have agreed to help us with the clean-up of a section of the highway of trash which [accumulated] over the months and years and we are just trying to make the place look a little nicer,” he said.

“It is something simple that we could do and a lot of our staff have agreed to participate and we are happy about that,” he said.

A good initiative

Coordinator of the Elmore Stoutt High School’s Environmental Club, teacher Tricia E. Henry said since she has been the club’s coordinator they have been involved in a number of such activities, like coastal clean-up and replanting of mangroves.

“I think this is a very good initiative because a lot of land has been reclaimed and through that a lot of mangroves would have been destroyed. Helping to replant mangroves would help to rebuild the mangrove population along the coastline which will in turn help our beaches and our bays,” she said, adding that it was also important for the prevention of erosion when there are hurricanes and high tides.

Henry said too that by participating in the event the students will have a better appreciation of why mangroves are necessary for the shoreline. “Even though they learn about it in school, it is important that they get this first-hand experience,” she said.

Allington R. Pickering of Conservation and Fisheries Department said that the Department was helping with the planting of mangroves shoots and seedlings along the section of the coast with a view to restoring eroded populations.

“A group for Caribbean Insurers Limited is here along with some staff of Conservation and Fisheries,” he said, adding that a number of plants of varying sizes have been planted with a view to adding to the mangrove population. He said too that the mangrove vegetation helps with keeping the water pure.

Pickering pointed out that natural erosion and attrition would have led to the destruction of mangrove plants in the past. “Over the years as you can see they have been dying. So we are trying to protect [restore them] by replanting the mangroves,” he said.

Will those mangroves interfere with the proposed CTL hotel/marina that supposed to be built in that area if the NDP wins the elections?

too bad there is still open sewage pipe and plans for an unneeded marina and hotel on the storm side of the island.
Even SCB is ruining their ancient mangrove by dumping on it. The gesture is made while developers (approved by ministers) continue to strip the environment. Now there is talk of development at Brewers and Josiahs Bay. I thought at least Josiahs would be protected... excuse me... forgot nothing is protected in the BVI.
