ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – While several persons have expressed their sadness at not having the ‘Christmas at Bobby’s block’ shopping atmosphere this year some vendors who use the area to sell their local produce complained of being shoved out for the season.

“Since they close, or even before, who we use to come out here and selling we little stock we can’t get to do it now since they set up things like this shoving we out.” complained one vendor.

On August 24, 2013 when a number of customers turned up at the Road Town branch of Bobby’s Supermarket, they were greeted by hand written signs on rough pieces of cardboard and other materials indicating that the store was closed for renovation.

This was met with much speculation, one of which was that the business was allegedly facing serious financial troubles. However, when contacted the business owner Mr Elton Leonard said that he was closing only for renovations. At that time he had declined to give an indication as to when the store would have reopened.

While there has been every evidence of renovation works continuing, still no word has been forthcoming as to a possible reopening date.

Several vendors have since taken the opportunity afforded them to conduct their business at the frontage but they claimed that for almost a week now they have not been able to do business as usual. “We all know it’s not an official thing but everybody got to live.” one complained.

The block has since been converted into an otherwise commercial block with the erecting of trestles that circle the entire area.

Meanwhile, Chief Planner in the Town and Country Planning Department, Mr Gregory W. Adams, who said he had observed the structures as recently as yesterday told this news site, “The structures were not requested of my office nor approved by my office.”

Though the idea was a welcome one for more convenient shopping for some people, others have insisted the regular Christmas atmosphere in the area has not been the same. “We accustomed to the area being nicely decorated with lights and Christmas decorations by Mr Elton, we miss shopping this year at Bobby’s,” said one woman. Similar sentiments have also been expressed by several others.

When contacted earlier this month, Mr Leonard indicated he was still not in a position to give a date for reopening but suggested that he would have loved to have the store back in full swing for the Christmas season. He could not be reached for further comment over the past few days.

Within the last two days I, too, heard at least two persons complain that Christmas this year is sadly missing Bobby's Supermarket for the variety of goods they carried for the Holiday Season which cannot be found in the other stores; also for the passion Elton had; and for his community spiritedness which caused him to decorate the area with flair. This added immensely to our Christmas celebrations. Upstreet used to be teeming with people. This year they appear to be just going through the motions.

Unfortunately, many of the other merchants hold tightly to the greenbacks (that we cannot carry with us) and they mimic Scrooge around this time, only concentrating on how much they can amass. Not even to spruce up the atmosphere with some decent decorations.

It is unfortunate that we never miss the water til the well runs dry. I wish Elton well in completing his renovations and returning to the forefront soon. Bobby's is a trendsetter, and has been so from the early days when Bobby and Ionie sold their products from that little building on Main Street ....from humble beginnings.

Truth be told, the area looks quite tacky with those unsightly shelves in the parking lot. Don't we have an active Beautification Committee anymore? Sad.

By the way, where can I get those bags of nuts that used to be on sale around Christmas? Can't find them yet, and I need some for tomorrow!

Bobby's also had the most flexible times. He opened early after 6am and late in the night which was very convenient.

Let me make is abundantly clear; it take regulations and rules to maintain law and order in a civil society: however when it come to our-people we are subjected to the rule-book (we cant do this & we not allowed to that)…mean-while, the so-called rich white investors are allowed all manner of tax breaks and incentives to development their business in BVI: here we have local business owner simply setting up temporary structures in attempt to offer holiday shoppers an alternative to make purchases and that is a great big old problem….look around, at the end of the shoppers are happy and the owner of the business turns a profit….but as I noted when it come to the BV Islander looking a creative way to make money its always some-one with an issue…..we are so full of fak !!!!!!!!! its just for the holiday season

Its a shame, that since there is no Bobby's, that Bolo's did not take it upon himself to keep the Christmas tradition alive by making the stretch festive...instead he took the opportunity to display his bicycles. It is a true saying that you don't miss the water until the well runs dry and boy oh boy do we miss Bobby's. Although the year was bad, Bobby's, I wish you GOD's blessing for a miracle and prosperity. See you in 2014!

it doesn't take much research to have some certainty of why one store owner can get away with blocking up the side walk and a parking lot

That area looks like a DUMP in the heart of the capital. Those venders should not be allowed to setup there like it is a market "IT IS NOT". We fail to stop people when they start doing something that is not acceptable and then that thing becomes law. Look at what happened by the Cruise Ship Pier. This is the capital the government need to stop letting people put of SHACKS. What a mess.

I agree with you 110%. Stop the CRAP before government start building structures to accommodate these people. Enough of the FOOLISHNESS.....you know these people only want an inch and then they quickly go for the mile....Strupes

Agree totally. What a mess. Drove up ther on that road on Mon and asked myself. What the hell is the city manager doing. Goodness whoever is responsible for erecting those ugly stalls could have a least spruced them up with some decoration. Shamefull

I agree with wise up. Here in the bvi we harass our own and all the rich people get all the tax breaks they come in on their private boats some customs agents don't care to search their boats but as soon as they see a local black on their boats they are all ready to search and nail you to the cross. The bvi will never get any better because of all the jelousy locals have against each other
