ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Trefle Designs by local designer Kristen C. Frazer has announced American Grammy award winning R&B and Soul artist Chrisette Michele Payne as the face of its Botanical Garden collection to be revealed mid next month at fashion shoot at the JR O’Neal Botanical Gardens in Road Town.

Virgin Islander Frazer today May 6, 2015 held a press conference in the Fishlock Hall of the JR O’Neal Botanical Gardens where she was accompanied by the accomplished singer from New York, USA. This collection houses two prints and solids that resemble beautiful floral gardens and will be available for purchase in June for women and girls. Chrisette Michele Payne is currently on tour and her next stop will be to perform at the St.Lucia Jazz Festival.

A perfect fit

“Chrisette is the perfect fit for this collection,” said Frazer. “She exudes positive vibes and is such a kind spirit. She has collaborated with artists such as Jay-Z and Nas,” she said. She expressed her gratitude that the singer/songwriter was able to take time from her busy schedule to come to the VI for the press conference and introduction as the face of the collection for Trefle Designs.

Frazer said she first met Payne during a fashion show in the Cayman Islands about three of four years ago. “Chrisette was actually performing there and I was delighted that she was performing. I showed her my designs and introduced myself and we did some pictures and all was well. Later on I was doing a line and I decided that I wanted [a celebrity]. I asked her to be the face of the line and she said yes,” said Frazer.

It is about personality

“It is really exciting for me to be able to support a young vision…I am glad to be here,” Payne said.

She said that there are many things that play into fashion “but I think it starts with personality”. Payne described Frazer’s personality as rambunctious and "her whole personality is very driven and you see it in her clothing, you see it in the colours, you see it in the cuts, she is bold and she is brave. So personality in music and in fashion is a place that she just rules. I think the most important part of partnering with Trefle is personality. I think it fits my personality.”

She explained that Trefle’s designs allow her to be able to express herself in a way that was not possible coming from a conservative upbringing. “I think it is so classy the way that she designs each piece. Being raised in a Christian home, it is one of those things where you want to be really careful and very respectful and you don’t want your grandmother to come out of the grave and shoot you,” she said.

Payne explained that the side of fashion that Frazer comes from allows her to comfortably wear her pieces. “She doesn’t come from risqué, she comes from vibrant, she comes from flower child, she comes from celebration. So the photoshoot itself felt like a celebration of classy. That’s why I felt ready,” she said.

Important to feel comfortable

Frazer at this point added that she likes for people to express themselves anyway that they can and swimwear is a very touchy thing. “So a woman really has to feel comfortable with what she is wearing when she goes to the beach or she’s at the pool,” she said, adding that women of all ages have worn her pieces.

“I am also happy with the fact that Chrisette is not a size two because the real woman is not an average size two and I want to be able to merge that and work with her in that way because realistically everyone is not a size two.
