MELBOURNE, Australia – Christopher H. ‘Chris’ Gayle was today Tuesday January 5, 2016 fined $7,200 by his Big Bash League team Melbourne Renegades following his controversial interview with Channel Ten reporter Mel McLaughlin.

In doing so, the Renegades have extended a formal apology to Mel McLaughlin after Gayle made inappropriate comments during Monday night's Big Bash clash against the Hobart Hurricanes.

"Chris's comments were completely inappropriate and disrespectful and there is simply no place for these kind of comments at the Melbourne Renegades or the broader community across any sport," Renegades chief executive Stuart Coventry said in a statement.

"The club would like to extend a formal apology to Mel McLaughlin. Mel is an outstanding sports presenter. We think of her very highly and the club and the players will ensure we work with her in a professional and respectful manner in the future.

"We've had several discussions with Chris in the last 24 hours and he has acknowledged that his comments were out of line."

Gayle's fine will be donated to the McGrath Foundation.

"We didn't think the situation would require a ban," Coventry told the media gathering."We looked at the circumstances and we saw it as a one-off scenario.

Gayle surprised

Coventry said Gayle was surprised by the fine, but will play in the all-Melbourne clash against the Stars. "He was quite surprised but he has accepted it in good faith and is looking forward to playing in the derby on Saturday."

Gayle caused a media storm after an interview with McLaughlin after smashing 41 runs off 15 balls for the Melbourne Renegades in their Big Bash clash with the Hobart Hurricanes.

McLaughlin asked Gayle about the aggression on display in the Renegades' innings during their win over the Hurricanes and the ex-West Indies Test captain took the interview in a completely different direction.

"I wanted to come and have an interview with you as well. That's the reason why I'm here, just to see your eyes for the first time," he said."Hopefully we can win this game and we can have a drink later. Don't blush, baby."

A visibly rattled McLaughlin responded by saying: "I'm not blushing."

We have to be so careful with what we say and do lately as everything gonna be racist, sexist, terrorist, etc.We have to be careful and vigilant but sometimes we tend to take things too far.To Chris, Bolt, Kimani, Collins,Sherri-Ann and others do be careful especially when you're interviewed, signing autographs, etc.

I was expecting something more appalling like the guy talking about eating her booty like groceries. Nothing wrong with what the guy did unless you have to ask for permission to talk to the opposite sex now.

I am outraged at this nonsense, a MAN has to apologize for asking a WOMAN for a date? I understand that it might not have been the appropriate time but he shouldn't apologize. I bet if he was was homosexual thing nobody would have a problem with it. #STRAIGHTLIVESMATTER

That's how the typical Caribbean man is, always friendly. WOW! It's okay for Bruce Jenner to be awarded for bravery and grace the front page of magazines globally, but this man can't make a light joke with a reporter? WOW!

Hey it was unprofessional... at first i thought man they can't be serious this must be because he had the temerity to ask out a white woman but the more i though about it, it was really unprofessional, the fine was a bit harsh, but no sexual harassment in the work place i guess.

How is that sexual harassment? If that is sexual harassment how can anybody pursue a relationship with someone of the opposite sex? He was not rude, his comments didn't focus on her body, he didn't drag it on for long.

So wait ....the man didn't call her no pet name, he simply told her he basically likes to see her an would like a drink. If he was WHITE it wouldn't have been sexist, she was shaken because the thought of the "ROD and STAFF" from Gayle to comfort her was frightening to her soul.
