ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Despite a sloppy second half defensive performance, the NAIA Division 2 Warner University Royals ended the first day of the Tropical Shoot Out with a 106-73 rout of the University of the Virgin Islands.

Halstead "JR" Chiverton was on fire in the first half, delighting a fair sized crowd with a series of 3’s and field goals to put the Royals in control of the game. Bryce Kachinksi was also proving a crowd favourite while Ray Victor was at the centre of much of the Royals offense and defensive work.

Despite finishing the half 52-24 with the team from St Thomas in danger of being overrun, the second half started with UVI battling back into the game. They were helped by some casual play by the Royals which, whilst never giving the underdogs a chance of an upset, did cause Coach Sean Hanrahan some concern. The Royals though would seal things up to close out the match 106-73 winners.

“At the start of the second half we were lackadaisical, “said Coach Hanrahan. “It turned into a street ball match, we score, they score, we score and you just can’t trade points in our conference against good teams so that was frustrating at times.”

Chiverton finished with 26 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals in 27 minutes playing time. He shot 9 of 20 field goals, 5 of 14 three pointers and 3 of 7 free throws, which after his hot start to the game was disappointing for the player. “Luckily the kind of team we are means that if one man drops off then another steps in,“ commented Chiverton. “Defense has to get way better, other than that we good and tomorrow we going to pick it up and tomorrow we need to get way better.”

Victor picked up 9 rebounds as he did his best to rally the defense, added 3 assists, 3 steals and notched 2 points. “I slipped in the second half and tweaked my groin muscle, but will be ok for tomorrow’s game,” he confirmed. “Tonight was a bit back and forth and the defense was kind of slack, but overall it was a good game I wish there wasn’t a scoreboard sometimes, kids lose focus and purpose and without purpose it gets sloppy.”

Hanranhan was pleased with the performance of both “JR” and Victor, commenting “Chiverton led us in points and Ray was up there in rebounds. They both do so well for us in so many areas that we are only going to win if they make their shots and defend well. “

The first game of the night saw Northwood University rout the University of Puerto Rico-Cayey 97-62.

The crowd for the opening night was less than expected, but those who were there were richly entertained and much much more of the same is promised.

Tonight's opening game at 7 P.M. will pit UVI against Northwood while Warner University will bounce against University of Puerto Rico-Cayey in the game to follow.

i was not impress wth the crowd..seems like it had more players than fan there...Typically the game hustle play involves guys flying around the court, diving out of bounds, recovering and tipping from the back-side
