ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Host of the weekly programme, Umoja, Cromwell Smith on ZBVI 780 AM, spoke out on just what he thinks of the territory entering trade deals with the Chinese, saying the territory can trade tourism and financial services while the Chinese trade goods; however, they cannot be allowed to come to set up manufacturing plants or to compete unfairly with locals.

Smith aka Edju En ka,  along with Vice President of Business at the BVI Chamber of Commerce and Hotels Association (BVICCHA) Shaina M. Smith, were speaking on the topic: Chinese investment in the territory, from a trade and marketing perspective, on Thursday January 12, 2017.

“If they are selling us goods, we want to sell them financial services and tourism, because that’s where the trade comes in. What we are saying, there needs to be a strategic plan of how we are going to diversify our market to attract additional income into the territory and still maintain our sovereignty, our business,” he said.

It was unearthed by this news site that the Chinese company China Communications Construction Company Ltd (CCCC), which has been given the contract to extend the runway at Terrence B. Lettsome Airport on Beef Islands, requested that they be allowed to set up a plant to mine their own rocks for the project.

VI needs to be top of their negotiation game

Shaina M.  Smith noted that the territory needs to be at the top of their negotiation game when it comes to any trade deal or agreement that we are going to enter into with anybody, “that we are clear as far as what we will and will not do because we know how it is going to affect us short and long term.”

“To me, it is a similar perspective of why we have not allowed American franchises for a reason. It is the same thing, even if we pivot but we continue to do trade with America but we decided in certain areas we are not going to allow direct competition, especially unsure direct competition because people still are ordering online and are travelling to the US and even St. Thomas; so it is more that has to be said in terms of if we are looking at a relationship with Asian companies or with Asian business what exactly does that look like,” she reasoned.

“Is it about trade and we are doing more supply out of Asia?  Because the products are better priced so therefore that affects our cost of living which is a good thing, in that if that is the case, as long as I am getting the same quality or better we are all for it.”

Communication is key

According to the host Cromwell Smith, communication with the people is crucial to understanding what the country is getting into.

“And again this is where communication with our government comes in because our government needs to keep us properly informed on whatever the trade deals that we negotiating so that we could know how to prepare ourselves and whether we can support that or not. Because ultimately we need to make the decision as the public as to how we are going to engage into trade with Asia,” he said.

Tourism or financial services can benefit

The outspoken host noted that he has been saying for a long time the need to not only diversify the VI’s economic offerings in regards to tourism and financial services but we need to be more aggressive into other markets.

“I could see how the airport could provide a quicker access if we could get planes coming directly from North America, directly into Beef Island from Asia, that would help in that regard.”

He also made reference to an article from the Caribbean Tourism Organisation a couple years ago, who projected that millions of Asians are going to be traveling to the western hemisphere by 2018.

“…And if we catch a one million of them we will be kicking, so we need to start looking into getting the market share from Asia. So it pleased me when the government opened an office in Asia and we are able to do a trade promotion forum. But we seem to be subjecting ourselves, to the view that if it ain't North America or Europe, it ain't no good; and there is something inherently wrong and bad about Asia.”

Last week, Permanent Secretary in the Premier’s Office Brodrick Penn was quoted as saying that considering the current financial climate in the territory, Premier Dr The Hon D. Orlando Smith led administration was going down the right course by welcoming Chinese investors and the VI should capitalise on that.

In order for the Chinese to complete this project for that kind of money they will have to use their own cement and asphalt plant it's no other way that they can do it and the distance in which they wants the asphalt plant to be located is spot on ,that is why our roads will never be any better cold asphalt will never bond properly and not using the proper bonding agent shore does not help some times I wonder what people like Sam Henry ,and Cromwell smith were doing while living in America they should know every major project like these they have their own plants even major housing developments have their own concrete plants but there are a set of people they will try to fool and give bad information by the way we have the most expensive bridge in the world and u cross it in under a second that is what u want for an airport runway and the Chinese gives account for every penny not those around here

Probably they need to come and set up shop so Tortola can compete with its neighbouring brothers and sister islands. You locals (which I am) need to take your heads out of the sand pit and travel to these down island as we call them and see how develop they are with the help of the Chinese government investing. You guys stay right here in Tortola don't visit nowhere and expect to continue living in stoneage. That is why Tortoola CANNOT compete with these develop islands. Wake up and smell the da**M coffee! You really think a local company can take on such and extensive project....you not not even saying let the local guys do some of the work...NO..give it to a local guys...if you don't want mother nature come swallow back up the reclaim land think again

Isn't it ironic though that although the Chinese Mom is giving them all of this financial stability she still feeding themselves with 'T T$' and the like. When you feed on things of substance 'wisdom' you find meat satisfies you much more than milk. 'This wisdom is for those who truly understands what is the finer things in life.. a very selective few!!'

Edju En Ka did not say that the Chinese should not be allowed to set up manufacturing plants here. He said that he was in favor of Chinese manufacturing in the BVI because our local stores would be able to cut out the United States Middle man and our local stores and the consumers will be able to get cheaper prices. but not Chinese retail stores competing with local businesses. I agree. If we continue to allow international stores to take away our business opportunities, others will be providing all the jobs for us and we will be just wage labourers and consumers. Is that what we want? Our children to find that there are no businesses opportunities for them? That's just a step above slavery. We already don't own enough of the businesses that bring money into our country (trust companies, hotels etc.) we want to give away the money's circulation businesses as well? Then we wonder why our government has to appease the internationals before the people who elected them. We depend on the internationals for our food clothing and shelter. Is this a situation we want to entrench for generations to come? Or do we want to apply a strategy to make us and our generations more economically self sustainable?

Look at all the products that you are now using and see where they are made.
