BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- The contention over loud motorcycles and the resulting noise nuisance is engaging the attention of Government and, according to Minister for Transportation, Works and Utilities Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5), legislative moves will be made to address the issue.

Speaking during a Saturday, January 23, 2021 community meeting in Baughers Bay, Hon Rymer said the Government will be looking to address the issues once and for all.

“As we sat here, we hear motorcycles ride by with a loud noise and that is something I just want to let you know that this government, we are looking towards making some amendments to the legislation where we will work to change the fines, the penalties, because we have done as much as we could with the motorcycles,” Hon Rymer said.

He said so far appeals to the riders themselves have fallen on deaf ears.

Community cried out after ban - Hon Rymer

“We have reached out to them, even when we restricted the usage of those motorcycles, the community cried out,” he said.

Over the years, VI legislators, including Premier Andrew A. Fahie (R1), have raised the issue of bikers and noise nuisance and have called on them to desist from their frowned upon practices.

“We understand it's a nuisance...and we are the law-making body and we will work to amend the laws,” Hon Rymer said.

According to the minister, the police must also play its part to enforce the laws. He said laws on paper would be useless without the enforcement from the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF).

Give me a break! You cannot catch and track them down for not wearing helmets or driving them unlicensed/uninsured but somehow you will magically catch them for noise? The parents need to deal with their wild @#$ kids and that would be a good start.

    How will loud be defined?
    • Decibels (26/01/2021, 16:36) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply
You have meters that can test the noise in terms of decibels, just like how you have meters to test the tint on the cars and the Radar guns to check the speed. Very simple. They just need to state the decibel limit.

While you're at it, please crack down on those big trucks transporting loose debris without securing it. its only a matter of time before something flies off and hits someone walking along the road or damages a vehicle.

Hon. Kye, please include fines on truckers using air brakes on their heavy duty vehicles for entertainment sake. They are as much a disturbance and nuisance as the bikers.

If we drive without a seat belt we get a ticket.
If we drive without insurance we get a ticket and go to court.
This is our law and we abide by it.
If a scooter driver is driving without a helmet, no ticket.
If a scooter driver is driving without insurance, no ticket and no court.
This is not the law but we abide by it.

Please Mr COP....WE NEED SUPERCOP back on the road....He needs to be back in traffic instead of WEPS. This is his strong suit...all he must do, is not to get caught up in any argument and he will be fine. Dish out the tickets and report ALL traffic offences...let the court deal with them ....

Please fine loud trucks and other vehicles that are backfiring and sputtering all over the place too. And while you're at it all club/bar music that plays loud outdoor music on the weekends. Add vehicles playing loud music too please. It's time to enforce peace and quiet in every aspect. Thanks in advance!
