CANE GARDEN BAY, Tortola, VI - Residents of Cane Garden Bay and other areas suffered a crippling blackout today April 10, 2014 which lasted hours following engine shut down and scheduled maintenance of high voltage systems by the British Virgin Islands Electricity Corporation (BVIEC).

According to a notice posted on its website today, the BVIEC said that customers on Tortola in the areas of Luck Hill, Soldier’s Hill, Cane Garden Bay, a portion of Brewer’s Bay, Round Hill, a portion of Mayaba, Ballast Bay and a portion of Windy Bay “that there will be no electricity supply on Thursday April 10, [2014] between the hours of 9.30 am and 1.30 pm.”

When Virgin Islands News Online called the BVIEC for an update, a staff member stated that while the maintenance to the high voltage system was completed, the corporation suffered a shutdown of one of its generators and that workers were battling to get it up and running again.

“We have completed that scheduled outage that we had for Cane Garden Bay but we ran into a situation with one of our generators out there…we had a problem. It shut down on us. So we are working to get that engine back,” said a staff member of the BVIEC. He stated too that since the feeder was already off they decided to leave it off because of the shortage of power created by the shutting down of the unit. He said that power would have been restored within an hour however as at post time power had not returned.

And we want to think we are "world class". Get the basics up and running before inviting 4000 people a day, expand the runway, build ferry terminals, mega yacht marinas to play with Oil Nut Bay, golf courses, 5 star hotels, and anything else that these people want to associate themselves with. This is not service for the people. It is playing at dress-up with the big boys. FIX THE PROBLEMS FIRST!!
