Ceres 10K Series: Struiken wins battle with Riley; Breaks course record

LONG BAY, Beef Island, VI- Top road racers Clifton Struiken and Neil Riley clashed for the first time this year when the Ceres 10K Series made its stop at Long Bay, Beef Island, on Saturday, October 19, 2019.

And it needed a record breaking effort from Clifton Struiken to win the battle with Riley on the partially hilly course known as ‘Prison Break’.

Struiken ran a blistering 35:54 minutes to demolish the course record of 40:45 minutes held by Reuben Stoby.

Riley had to settle for second in a fast 36:54.

Third was Julius Farley in 40:45.

In the female category, Julianne Potgieter completed the distance first in 46:58. Cate Barbour was second in 53:30 while Jillian Plaxton was third in 55:17.

Series leader Katrina Lindsay opted for the College Classic 2-mile race on Virgin Gorda where she shattered her own course record with her time of 11:40.34.

‘Prison Break’, which was race 4 of the Ceres 10K Series, started in the car park at Long Bay, Beef Island, and headed turns towards and through the airport terminal, towards Minines Plants & Landscaping and returned to the main road and across QE II Bridge before turning right on the road to HM Prison for approximately 1 mile before returning to the starting point.

Following the race, participants were treated to large boxes of Ceres Juices by series sponsor, Proudly African.
