ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The reigning domestic 20/20 cricket champions, Cavaliers, continued its commitment to the Virgin Islands community with a donation of $3,500 to the BVI Cancer Society last Saturday October 13, 2012.

Vice-President of the club Ravindra Maywahlall presented the funds to President of the BVI Cancer Society, Mrs. Theresa Frett. The presentation was made at the end of a raffle draw held to help raise funds for the Club and support the BVI Cancer Society.

During the presentation, Maywahlall stated, “On behalf of the Cavaliers Cricket club, its Executive Committee, current and past players I would like to express our sincere gratitude to the community for their continued support. This is our second such venture. Last year we donated proceeds from our raffle to the Diabetes Association and now this year, proceeds from the raffle has gone towards the BVI Cancer Society.”

He thanked the BVI Cancer Society for all the work that the Society has been doing in the community.

Mrs. Frett thanked the Cavaliers for their donation and noted that it coincides with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is observed in October. Mrs. Frett related that the funds will be used to assist women offset the cost of mammogram tests.

Before the donation was made, the winners of the club’s raffle were drawn and publicly announced.

The third place winner of $500 was Nareshwar Gurdat of Hannah's Estate while Don Smith carted off the second place prize of $1,000.

The grand prize winner of $1,500 was Ralston Brown of Horsepath.

Treasurer of the club, Dr. Jasmattie Yamraj, also spoke prior to the raffle draw.

Dr. Yamraj noted that although the players that represent Cavaliers on the field are men; many of them have mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, aunts and other women that are most likely to be affected by Breast Cancer.

Dr. Yamraj stated, “Some of us have had family members that have been affected by breast cancer. The best way to beat any type of cancer is early detection and we want to encourage regular testing and self-examination to spot the early warning signs.  Many have died as a result of breast cancer. Many have also survived because they were able to detect the warning signs very early and take corrective treatment.”

The club looks forward to its next venture in 2013 and the 20/20 championships when cricket resumes at Greenland, hopefully early in the new year.

The attention given to Breast Cancer by the BVI Cancer Society every October is commendable, but what about the other cancers. If the BVICS continues to only put efforts into bringing awareness to Breast Cancer, they should just rename themself the BVI Breast Cancer Society.

What have you done for Cancer Awareness or the BVI on a whole? If nothing, then you should STFU!!!
