GRAND BAHAMA, Nassau, Bahamas - Carnival Cruise Lines plans to expand its Ocean Medallion project in Grand Bahama, having already hired several Grand Bahamians to begin the groundbreaking project, the company’s Chief Experience and Innovation Officer John Padgett said Friday.

Ocean Medallion is a wearable device that enables users to experience a personal digital concierge, made possible by bridging the gap between the physical and technological components of the concierge experience.

This new level of personalized service is designed to make certain processes easier for Carnival’s customers.

Padgett said many of the workers currently on the project underwent training to learn to install the Ocean Medallion hardware and software on cruise ships, and he revealed that a team of eight Bahamians continues to monitor those systems.

“We’ve had no issues at all with finding good talent in The Bahamas,” said Padgett.

“So far we’ve converted five ships; we have 100 ships, so you can imagine that as we expand our strategy we’ll expand the need for people.”

Connectivity Fabulous

Carnival Cruise Lines has established relationships with both Aliv and Cable Bahamas to supply infrastructure for Ocean Medallion on Grand Bahama.

Padgett lauded the Internet connectivity infrastructure on Grand Bahama, explaining that it is the key to the Ocean Medallion project.

“The connectivity has been fabulous,” he said. “There is nothing more fundamental than connectivity. We couldn’t be more pleased with Aliv, REV and Cable Bahamas.”

Padgett spoke at this year’s Grand Bahama Technology Summit and explained that this groundbreaking technology is expected to change the cruise industry across the world. He noted that Bahamians should be proud that many of their own have been integral in bringing such a project to fruition.

He explained that nine ships have been outfitted with the Ocean Medallion technology, and five of those ships were outfitted in The Bahamas. All of the Medallion technology has passed through Bahamian hands at some point, he stressed.

The Medallion project, according to Padgett, is expected to expand and become standard on many more ships. He said many more Bahamians will be utilized on future projects.

Minister of State for Grand Bahama Kwasi Thompson told Guardian Business that Carnival Cruise Lines has done an amazing job training Bahamians to take on such a groundbreaking project. He added that as Carnival grows the project in Grand Bahama, he hopes it will lead to more technology companies using Grand Bahama as a hub for their projects.
