Cappoon's Bay Clinic renamed in Honour of Nurse Theresa S. Blyden

CAPPOON’S BAY, Tortola, VI - Cappoon's Bay Clinic has officially been renamed in honour of Late, Ms Theresa S. Blyden, in a simple ceremony held at the health institution yesterday, November 20, 2018.

Those in attendance for the renaming ceremony included, Premier, Dr the Honourable D. Orlando Smith (AL), Opposition Leader, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) and Director of Primary Healthcare Services, Dr Natasha D. Frett, among others.

Hon Fahie, in a subsequent posting on social media said “Just over two years ago, I wrote to the then Minister of Health, (Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton(AL)), to have the Cappoon's Bay Clinic renamed after one of the stalwart medical persons in the First District.”

He said, “the Minister agreed for the formation of a committee to do so...The Ministry of Health had full oversight of the initiative and they did a marvelous job” and pointed out that the renaming ceremony was the culmination of the collective efforts.

Who is Ms Blyden

Born to Ms Lizzy Potter and Mr John Smith, of Apple Bay, on October 1, 1911, Nurse Blyden—as she would soon be named—is said to have developed a love for nursing and eventually functioned as a midwife.

Her formal career as a midwife and primary health care provider spanned between the 1940s and 1960s.

Ms Blyden is said to have delivered hundreds of babies in the Virgin Islands (VI) from Frenchman’s Cay to Carrot Bay and was recognised by the BVI Nurses Association in 1981 for her contributions to the Territory.
