ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- With the heightened talk of a possible World War III, particularly with the controversial policies of US President Donald J. Trump, at least three callers of the 3-D Show on ZBVI 780 AM on Friday February 17, 2017 called on the Government of the Virgin Islands (UK) to do more where food sustainability is concerned.

The three callers expressed to radio show host Doug Wheatley that the agricultural sector is lagging behind.

No one cares

“We need food on Tortola because we don’t have nothing in this country. And the Governor (H.E John S. Duncan OBE) needs to open his eyes and see what is happening here and get up and do his work, and do what he has to do. Nobody seems to be interested in farming in the BVI, they not doing anything to help the farmers,” was the cry of one female farmer who spoke of her inability to receive water to her farm located in the Paraquita Bay area.

“Nobody cares, when the world war start you think food going to come down here? So they need to wake up and stop playing with Tortola. They take the money and do a bunch of stupidness,” she remarked.

Territory suffered during World War II

Another Caller pointed out that when the Second World War occurred from September 1, 1939 to September 2, 1945, the territory suffered immensely.

“Tortola couldn’t get flour, they couldn’t get nothing. No ships were coming here, you didn’t see any tourists coming here. But tourism, tourism, tourism…” he said.

Can’t live off beautiful ladies & beaches

The third Caller to the radio programme said there is more than just saying the VI wants to be independent. According to him, the territory has to be careful since independence doesn’t mean that you are living with your parents and it is time for you to build your own house and move out.

“It’s not that,” he said. “We don’t have good discipline here like before. The BVI is not ready for independence we don’t make anything to transport, we don’t make anything here to use in the country, and we can’t live off our beautiful ladies and beautiful beaches.”

According to independent.co.uk, World War three is on its way, according to people in major western nations, a poll revealed. With the world’s superpowers backing different sides in the bloody conflict in Syria, ISIS continuing to fight in the Middle East, a spate of terrorist attacks across the globe and Vladimir Putin and Donald J. Trump both talking a tough game, the YouGov survey of 9,000 people across nine countries found popular opinion thinks world peace has rarely been further away.

you have your head in the sand if you really think that. This man is dangerous and it is only a couple of steps between democracy and dictator. If you hinder congress and squash the press you have no democracy. And it will take 20 yrs to get any semblance of democracy back again.

I remember reading somewhere, "You have your head in the sand if you think Donald Trump will be elected President of the United States of America." #Well

only one talking about the real issues is julian willock! But medium to long term thinking is not what either political party seems to spend much time or energy on.

So all voters and countries will get the government they deserve.
We, however, do not deserve any of this clown show.

Politically, the USA election is a non-issue as all supporters of the right have already shown themselves by voting for the Mr. Trump

only 38% or so support him. it is an issue indeed. Trump has given sympathetic news agencies passes when they don't qualify, don't call on established respected news outlets and papers. By calling only on supporters he slants the news and ignores the "facts". He supports alternative facts himself. look at how many lies he has obviously told repeatedly, yet supporters don't do any reading or research themselves. That is blind following.

Food security would become more of an issue in the not too distant future. Here in the BVI I'll say more that 75 percent of the fruits and vegetables imported into this territory are grown in California. These fruits and vegetables are mainly grown by Mexicans who are paid low wages. Therefore these items can be sold / purchased at relatively reasonable prices .If the US president gets his wish and deports all these undocumented workers from the states, the cost of fruits and vegetables could increase dramatically and the working class in the VI purchasing power would dwindle. That's because Americans and other documented workers would be paid much highers wages and these costs would be passed on to the consumers.
Does the NDP administration have any plans regarding the increase in the cost of living ,which is inevitable, or are they gonna be reactive instead of proactive, which seems to be the norm?

Strongly agree with your views! We need to invest back into the development of farming and food production within our territory. While Tourism and the Financial Industry may appear to be our main economic industry, we need to plan and be able to provide food for ourselves.
