BEESTON HILL, St Croix, USVI- Reverend Percy McCray of Cancer Treatment Centers of America ® (CTCA), a leading authority on the role that faith-based organizations can play in helping individuals, families and communities understand the needs of cancer patients and their families, will address the annual St. Croix for Christ Crusade, June 24-26, at the Miracle Revival Deliverance Tabernacle Church, Beeston Hill. The pastoral care leaders of nearly 100 churches are expected to attend the crusade.

Rev. McCray, director of pastoral care at CTCA® at Midwestern Regional Medical Center in Illinois, will deliver the educational session through the Our Journey of Hope (OJOH) program, which is a comprehensive lay-ministry training program that teaches, through faith-based and other outreach programs, how to better support patients battling cancer. OJOH teaches lay ministers, members of faith communities, and members of community groups how to connect with and support cancer patients throughout their community. The teaching and its message of hope are the same for individuals who attend church and those who do not.

Rev. McCray said “Doing battle with cancer demands heroic strength, and every weapon the patient and families have in their arsenals should be brought to bear. Bringing faith and spirituality into the struggle is a tremendous benefit for the patient and relatives.”

Rev. McCray will speak all three nights at services beginning at 7 p.m. “Hope in Christ” is the theme of the crusade, sponsored by the St. Croix Evangelical Ministerial Association.

“It is all about reaching families and encouraging them to have a relationship with the Lord,” said Rev. Dr. Eddie Williams, president of the association and pastor of the Community Baptist Church, Plot 7, at Estate Pearl, Christiansted, St. Croix.

As in the United States, cancer is the second leading cause of death in the Virgin Islands, according to a report, United States Virgin Islands Healthy Virgin Islands 2010.

According to the report, the mortality data in the Virgin Islands mirror national trends, with breast and prostate cancers being the most common. The report also states that the Virgin Islands had 112 cancer deaths per 100,000 population in 1998, compared to the total United States rate of 201.4 cancer deaths per 100,000 population.

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 1.6 million cases of cancer were diagnosed in the United States in 2012. (That report did not include statistics for the Virgin Islands territory.)

This will be Rev. McCray’s third visit to the Virgin Islands providing information about the Our Journey of Hope program.

McCray previously visited the Virgin Islands in December 2012 and in April of this year to conduct training in cooperation with Covenant Point Institute, nonprofit educational organization in the Caribbean based in the U.S. Virgin Islands.  The training was geared towards clinicians, hospital chaplains, counselors, and community clergy at the Virgin Islands Cardiac Center at Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center. Nearly 300 people attended over the course of two days.
