Cancer is two times higher in the Caribbean compared with the USA

- Virgin Islands statistics unknown as no cancer registry exists
Cancer in the Virgin Islands is two times higher than in the United States of America.
The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) is the new single regional public health agency for the Caribbean and is involved in, among other things, surveillance and control of communicable diseases.

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - In a recent study published this month (December 2016) in the Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) conducted by the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) and the United States Centre for Disease Control (CDC), it found that the rate of death from cancer is much higher in the Caribbean region than in the United States of America (USA) with triple the population of the Caribbean region.

In the Caribbean most residents, according to the study, die from cervical cancer, breast, prostate and colon cancer.
The study shows that in the USA, only death by lung cancer is higher than the Caribbean.
The study unearthed that the leading cause of cancer in Caribbean men is prostate. For Caribbean women, it is breast cancer that kills more women.

Many researchers were alarmed by the results of the study as they believed the large number of deaths from these types of cancers is very alarming since they are mostly preventable.
Breast cancer can be detected early and treated successfully. Cervical cancer is perhaps the most preventable through education, vaccination against the human papilloma virus (HPV), screening, early detection and treatment.

Dr. James Hospedales the Executive Director of the Caribbean Public Health Agency said the results are alarming for the region as cancer is now the second leading cause of death in the Caribbean.Dr. Hospedales said prevention measures include avoiding use of tobacco, limiting alcohol use, eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, keeping a healthy weight, and being physically active.

Cancer up in the VI-Gloria A. Fahie

President of the BVI Cancer Society Ms. Gloria A. Fahie told our newsroom, that as far as she knows “there is no statistics on persons who have died of cancer in the Virgin Islands”.
Ms. Fahie, herself a cancer survivor, said she has been calling for a cancer registry as persons who have been diagnosed and died of the disease in the Virgin Islands is “up at an alarming rate”.

With some three Doctors in the ruling National Democratic Party, Hons D. Orlando Smith (AL) Kedrick D. Pickering (R7) and Hubert O’Neal (R9), it is unclear what the government’s policy is to fight preventable diseases.

@Sisyphus... True. I Agree. This is serious. Cancer can be pass on and pass down to generations to come.. Time to get serious about local food production.

Sisyphus, I agree with your conclusion. However, I insist that the type of food is paramount. Root vegetables and foods with high starch content must be eliminated from our diets. Educators and dieticians ought to speak truth to the prevailing misinformation. The most of the "Stuff" that our people is eating is not food at all. Soybean and its byproducts such as Tofu are poison. Many of our cooking oils are labeled "Vegetable Oil" but upon checking the ingredients one will find that Soybean remains the only ingredient. Animal milk consumption ought to be banned.
Finally, many of our people readily admit "The food we are eating is killing us" yet they double down in a trans-like manner eat the same "Stuff" as if they are addicted - no willingness to change. Planting their own fruits and vegetables is "Out of the question."

A lot of women are causing cancers in their breasts and don't know it. They are wearing their bras much too tight and raising their breasts way to high trying look attractive. They are not aware they are cutting off the blood circulation for hours and sores are growing in the breasts and lymph nodes. Then some are wearing their cell phones on their breasts which is radiation poison. Some are using bleaching cream on their bodies and under their arms again where the lymph nodes are with cancer causing ingredients. Some are wearing under wire bras (Lord knows why). Metal is NOT supposed to be on your breasts. Now they have this thing out called waist trainer, which also cuts off circulation and crushing your lungs affecting their breathing. What is going on?

Well all you have to do is produce your own food. I don't even see the simplest of native foods being sold here, such as fry fish and johnny cakes. So wise up and produce your own food here, instead of driving up and down the road playing US ghetto style loud rap music.

Anecdotally, it seems as if the incidence of cancer is increasing in the VI. But IMO is just a guess. A repository of cancer incidences needs to be established. Furthermore, a medical research council(MSC), if there is not already one, needs to be commissioned to research the cause of the increasing incidences of cancer, alzheimer's, along with chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure) .........etc. There is much speculations on the cause of the increase of these diseases. Some attribute the cause to the increase consumption of imported process foods and environmental factors. Decades ago, VI residents consumed mostly locally produced FRESH food, i.e., seafood (fish, conchs, whelks, turtle), meat, cow milk, ground provision, fruits, vegetables, chicken (yard bird), eggs........etc. However, today most of the food Vi residents consumed is imported.

Moreover, individuals can prevent or delay the onset of some of the chronic diseases by lifestyle changes. For example, they can adhere to a strict healthy diet, partake in consistent exercise program, engage in preventative medical care for the early detection of diseases, get regular comprehensive medical physicals..........etc.

Disclaimer: I'm not a medical doctor and have not had any medical training. The above is just the opinion of a lay person.

Good words of wisdom. Our soil is rich in minerals that our bodies sore needs but there had been a movement to move away from locally grown to imports that may have been grown from inferior soil. There had been a paradigm shift geared towards becoming an affluent society but that affluence remains at the top while the masses are suffering with cancer and other preventable diseases.

I maintain that our diet remains the primary driving force behind the up-tick in chronic diseases. Yes people must become proactive and practice health care management. I am aware that this view is not popular for it has to compete against the glamour of alcohol and exotic foods from around the world that may not be compatible with our African genome/biochemistry. People cannot depend on government to do everything. They must take control of their health in an effort to live a healthy vibrant lifestyle.

@E. Leonard, though not a medical practioner, useful points, nonetheless. Nevertheless, there is another possible cause for the increase in these chronic and preventable diseases. It is the stress resulting from the materialism drive. VI residents passionately and aggressively pursue acquiring material stuff with risk to their personal health and well-being.

Regardless of how people are getting this disease, let's stop the "blame game" on foreign foods and other stuff. Let's just pray for a cancer-free recovery for all cancer-stricken patients here and abroad.
