Calming device just needed to be completed – Hon. Fraser
Hon. Fraser, who had the device erected at the request of the National Security Council, and the Police to curb speeding along the Beef Island road following the death of Trey Erickson in 2011, told Virgin Islands News Online that the device is “a job that is incomplete” hence the complaints from residents.
“It was placed there to prevent speeding; all that needs to be done is to have the traffic lanes around it reconstructed, and place proper markings and signs,” Hon. Fraser opined. “Removing it is just going to be a waste of resources that this Government claims it does not have.”
The device’s removal came to light when Minister for Communications and Works, Hon. Mark Vanterpool had informed this news agency that the former acting director of Public Works Department (PWD) Dr. Drexel Glasgow will be responsible for rectifying the problem. Hon. Vanterpool is toying with the idea of placing a speed bump.
However, Hon. Fraser believes that the calming device slows a speeding vehicle while at the same time avoiding the unnecessary inconveniencing of normal driving by having to “stop and go up and down” a speed bump.
And while the removal of the device “is neither here nor there” to Hon. Fraser. He explained to this news agency that when PWD had built the device it infringed upon the lanes and made them narrower.
“So nothing was done to reconstruct the lanes...at one time I was told they ran out of asphalt for the lanes and when they did get it, nothing was done,” the former Minister disclosed. “You see if the Minister doesn’t get involved in everything, all he hears is excuses.”
When asked why it was not completed under his watch, Hon. Fraser, who is also the Third District Representative, revealed that instructions were issued, and assurances were received that the works would have been carried out, and besides, it came at a time when he was otherwise preoccupied. Constructed began last August.
