Caller: Miss BVI 2012, not first to receive pearls

NDP Radio Caller says Miss BVI 2012, Sharie deCastro is not the first to be presented with pearls. Photo: VINO
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - With regard to two pieces of jewellery given to Miss BVI 2012, by Little Switzerland, namely a pair of ‘Mikimoto’ earrings and necklace valued at $3500, a caller on NDP Radio stated that it is not the first time pearls were given to a Miss BVI Queen.

The pearls that were given to Ms. Sharie deCastro, Miss British Virgin Islands 2012, according to committee members, are expected to be passed down to other Queens to come and was also thought to be the first time something of that nature had  been done.

According to the caller during the airing of the talk show which was aired on a local radio station on August 20, 2012, she said she was extremely happy about the jewellery given to Ms. deCastro to start the tradition, “but this is not the first time.”

She added that in 1975, when little Switzerland only sold fine china and crystals, the home of fine jewelry was another jewellery store over in St. Thomas.

She said herself and other committee members at the time used to go over to St. Thomas to  make sure, that not only the Queen but the 1st runner up as well, were gifted a string of pearls and earrings.

“Young ladies should have a string of pearls and should be able to wear pearls… the girls from 1976, we left in 81… every Miss BVI had a string of pearls.”

She added that people in the Virgin Islands have a tendency, to say something happens for the first time, before consulting the past and making sure that it is indeed the first time.

The jewellery was presented to the recently crowned Miss BVI 2012, during a formal ceremony at the Little Switzerland store location in Road Town, August 16, 2012.

According to the Manager of Little Switzerland, Josiah Russel, the ‘heirloom’ piece is a symbol of success, hope and beginnings that Ms. deCastro and other future queens can wear while attending events and other beauty shows, representing the Virgin Islands.

So what is your point Ms. P???? let’s just celebrate we finally have a real Miss BVI an indigenous girl from getting side track with what was first or last…what about saying we are proud for the first time in recent history we had a Miss BVI show that was judged fairly and she born here????

You sound very ignorant when you say 'real Miss BVI'. Any young lady who meets the criteria of the show and runs and wins is a real Miss BVI. We seem to allow ourselves to be bogged down with petty foolishness and not with the substance the person will bring to the role of Miss BVI. Last year when Abigale won many people had a lot to say about her. She proved all the naysayers wrong [including myself] as that young lady was one of the few who really when out and supported many community projects in the BVI. In addition she was very visible throughout her entire reign as Miss BVI. I found her to be a very outgoing, friendly, articulate and always willing to lend her support. I am saying all this to say let us start looking at substance. The jury is still out on Miss DeCastro. From what I have seen she does not have half the charisma as the previous Miss BVI.

The jury may still be out but trust me she will be the BEST Miss BVI in a long time if not the best Miss BVI ever!!! You'll be proven wrong AGAIN! Also, fix your sentence structure; it should read - "I found her to be very outgoing, friendly, and articulate, always willing to lend her support." Listen, you can't just SEE charisma, you have to KNOW charisma - any person can put on a front and act like they have charisma in public but when you get to know them they have none at all. Try getting to KNOW our new queen and you will UNDERSTAND what charisma really is. If anyone sounds ignorant, it's you!!!

I completely agree. I for one had a lot to say about Miss Hyndman, but she continued to prove me wrong. I can admit to being wrong. And lets give jack his jacket she did an pretty good job representing us. I do believe the jury is still out on Miss DeCastro while she is very intelligent, she seems very timid. I support her but please do not think that just because she is from here that automatically gives a pass. She like the previous queen will have to prove herself worthy of being Miss BVI. BTW I think the committee needs to revamp her wardrobe. The few times in which I have seen her, she has not stood out. Work in progress is all I have to say!!!!

Yea.. I think she won a 5 thousand dollar wardrobe so that should help.

        Jump high, jump low, hate on the bloger or not, that facts remains;
        1. Ms. De castro is an indigenous Virgin Islander which makes her a “real” full blood queen
        2. She is smart and very sophisticated
        3. She won the Crown hands down and it’s the only Queen show in 5 years not in dispute
        4. We the people are proud to say we have a real Miss BVI
        5. Either take the facts or go back to your country or that of your parents!

The person did congratulate the newly crowned Miss BVI. However, this is only a little constructive criticism. Before you say something is a fact, check yourself and your information. No one is saying she should get the pearls or any of the sorts. Just don't say she's the first to receive pearls is others have received pearls before. What can be said, is that she's the first to receive a pair of ‘Mikimoto’ pearls from Little Switzerland. Now what is truly hypocritical is all you people that have a problem with other girls that might not reside in the BVI winning the pageant. You have no problem with them running and making it look like more girls are running for this coveted title, no problem at all--but let them win. Shame on you. If you don't want your non indigenious girls to win, then don't allow them to compete. Simple.

The caller is just a big hypocrite and instead of saying what she said, she should at least congratulate the young lady for winning the crown. Some people just want to act like they know everything and the history of every god dam thing in the BVI our simply to interject themselves, as if they were the do all and be all of all things in the BVI. I am sick of it!!! Some of these old people need to go pray!!!

Me anit got no time for if jewels had been given to Miss BVI before in some previous life by someone who was involved in festival. All I know is our Miss BVI is smart...Sharie was the only one who answered the question with sense. She deserved all that she is getting even if she has to hand them over next year!

Ms. P, don't use the radio stations to continuously toot your own horn. A bit of advice - it doesn't look or sound good on your part. I do not think the Tourist Board was trying to insinuate that it was the first ever but obviously it has been a very long time. Do I sense a little anger because your grand daughter did not win??? Furthermore, were the pearls Mikimoto or IKI OTO???
