BVIRC aiming to raise funds through annual walk

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The BVI Reading Council is targeting a Classroom Library Project to encourage greater interest in reading amongst students, through the National Walk for Literacy on September 8, 2016.

New President of the BVIRC, Kirima Forbes explained on the Umoja radio programme with Cromwell Smith aka Edju Enka on ZBVI 780 AM on Thursday September 1, 2016 that September 8, 2016  is the 50th anniversary of National Literacy Day globally and the usual walk will be the high point of the day, but with a difference.

“It is called the national walk because we have plans to have the walk in East End, in Road Town, West End, North Sound and the Valley in Virgin Gorda, in Anegada and in Jost Van Dyke,” she said.

Schedule of walks

In Tortola, the walk will begin from East End, from the East End/ Long Look Community Center to the bridge and back, in Road Town, from the Government Administration Complex to Qwomar Ltd and back. In West End, it will begin from the West End Basketball court to the foot of Zion Hill and back.

In Virgin Gorda: From North Sound from The Bond to midway towards The Valley, and in the Valley, the walk will being from the Marina to the Valley and back.

In Anegada: From the Claudia Creque Educational Centre to the Botanical Garden and in Jost Van Dyke: From the Jost Van Dyke School to the Bottom/Great Harbour and back.

The walk will begin from 5.30-6 am and persons are urged to register for a small fee which will aid in the Classroom Library project.

“The project is in an effort to encourage our students to read more. We want to provide literacy material in various classrooms around the territory,” Forbes remarked.

It is also the hope that the populace donates to the cause and register for a small fee to join the walk.
