BVIFA names U-20 Women’s World Cup Squad
Whilst Coach Kate knows who she will name as Captain and Vice-Captain from what she describes as a strong group, she is quite rightly remaining tight lipped on releasing those names until she is ready to do so.
The full squad: Lavern Fahie, Makeda Fahie, Victoria Medley Parkins, Keithrece Smith, Shevorne Vanterpool, Jakeisha Rogabert, Tirah Bascombe, Tia Rakel Modeste, Kelienne Smith, Britney Peters, Kezia Gumbs, Sapphire Flax, Joi Ann Thomas, Karesha Martin, Laresha Martin, Danielle Ward, Kimone Mills and Nekeisha Chinnery.
The Coaching staff comprises Kate Rowson as Head Coach, Assistant Coaches, Jeffrey Demming, Thomas Albert and Morris Mark Junior. The team Manager is Jeanna James
“The final preparation is done, we have had two weeks of very hard work, it’s definitely been very different for the girls in a training camp environment and they have made steady progress from day one,” commented Coach Kate. “Their attitude to learning has been absolutely brilliant and I feel very confident that we have a good squad of players and I feel confident that I know who our strongest eleven are.”
On the tournament and what can be expected from the team, Rowson noted “I feel that we are prepared in terms of organisation of tactics and priorities. It’s a tournament of 3 games back to back and there’s no doubt it will be very hard. There are only four teams in the pool and the first game will be very important so we will have to see on Tuesday.”
It is the biggest stage that the girls will have played on and, adding into the mix that they are playing at home, there will no doubt be some nerves and apprehension in the squad, but Rowson explained how she will settle those pre match nerves. “From day one I have instilled a game plan in terms of the preparation and what they will physically go through the process is all set. We have worked very hard on them playing the game and not the occasion to steady their nerves, which we will also work on today and Tuesday.”
The team is fit and ready to go so it’s all going to be down to how they perform during the games. Nevertheless, Coach Kate expects a lot of excitement. “All 3 days feature two games and our first game is St Kitts so that should be good. The fans will see a lot of hard work and pressurising of the opponents. If the field is good then we will aim at a possession game.”
The girls have been fantastic and ready to represent the BVI, their families and themselves very well with their attitude, their politeness, their mannerisms and their hard work and so a good crowd is expected to support the girls starting Tuesday night.
